hollywood double standards...

alrighty. i was talking to my mom tonight and we got on this subject. i was asking why it seemed that, as a *general* rule, it's acceptable for overweight men to show skin and goof off and look average in movies, but girls are not. i've seen tons of movies where the overweight sensitive/funny/cuddly guy ends up with the hot bod girl, but *rarely* have i seen the reverse of this. this also makes me think of at the beach, most people accept overweight men sunbathing shirtless with little or no comment, but an overweight woman in a bikini gets "omigosh - the nerve of her - how dare she?!".

my mom tells me i'm obsessive and that none of this is actually true.

what do you think? am i making this up, or is there a trend to this?

There is definitely a trend with the overweight guy/skinny girl.

    Think of:
    - According to Jim
    - King of Queens
    - Still Standing

But I love that on Glee they have Mercedes with Sam! :)

    Def. a double standard...

Well, remember they are written shows....

Take King of Queens for example, Kevin James, has always been a big guy, CBS saw him & liked him, and built a show around him. It's not like it's real life, typically you find people who are at a similar size & health ratio.

You're right on, there definitely is a double standard! Although it's more appropriate for shows to make fun of overweight men too, where you really wouldn't find them doing that to women.

Fiona became an ogre, so this doesn't really count.

I see your point, OP. I agree-- it is definitely lopsided in Hollywood.

That being said, no one ever claimed Hollywood was anything like reality. In reality those hefty guys would be rich, and then we'd all understand the skinny hot wife. Right?

LOL! Fifi was an excellent portrayal of a bottom heavy women. I'm proud of Disney.

No one can ever think of another hefty girl with hot guy example, though. I asked around. :/

I see this discrepancy. There's only one thing for it, we have to normalise the site of overweight women in bikinis. I hereby vow that, regardless of my size, if it is unbearbly hot, and the sun is not shining down in all it's skin cancer giving intensity, I will strip to my bikini (or bra)!

Please take a look at the majority of action movies and romantic comedies. I don't see any pudgy or fat guys in many of these movies. It gets tiring about hearing how women are the only ones who have unrealistic expectations put on them by tv and movies.

Oh I missed the beach comment too. I've never heard anyone say "ohmigosh the nerve" because an overweight girl was wearing a bikini to the beach.

This is another valid point. I'm re-watching Mad Men right now, and I literally have the biggest crush on Jon Hamm ever. He is sooooo sexy. But he's an unrealistic ideal and we can't expect the average man to live up to him.

It really is a double standard. It's something I have thought about on occasion. It bothers me a lot. :/

Try a SoCal water park and listen to the onlookers when a bigger girl comes down the slides.

it's not really a double standard when you realize that most things are written and directed by overweight men for other men

another thing ive noticed is that in many movies and tv shows involving teens (i just watched the remake of fright night last night) it's usually the girl (who also way hotter than the boy) who's all about seducing the boy. so these guys are not only rewriting their present, they are also rewriting their past
