"The Top 20 Worst Restaurant Meals in America"

This will make you stop and think:

20: Worst Fast-Food Chicken Meal - Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips from McDonald's (5 pieces) with cream ranch sauce. 830 Calories, 55 grams fat (4.5 Trans fat), 48 carbs. Add a large fries and regular soda and this seemingly innocuous chicken meal tops out at 1,710 calories.

19: Worst drink - Jamba Juice Chocolate Moo'd Power Smoothie (30 fl oz). 900 calories, 10 g fat, 183 carbs, 166 g sugar. Jamba Juice calls it a smoothie, MSNBC calls it a milk shake. The beverage contains as much sugar as 8 pints of Ben & Jerry's butter pecan ice cream.

18: Worst supermarket meal - Pepperidge Farm Roasted Chicken Pot P ie (whole pie). 1,020 calories, 64 g fat, 86 g carbs. Label may say this pie serves two, but, who ever divided a small pot pie in half? Once you crack the crust, there will be no stopping.

16: Worst Mexican entree - Chipotle Mexican Grill Chicken Burrito. 1,179 calories, 47 g fat, 125 g carbs, 2,656 mg sodium.

15: Worst kids' meal - Macaroni Grill Double Macaroni 'n' Cheese. 1,210 calories, 62 g fat, 3,450 mg sodium. It's like feeding your kid 1-1/2 boxes of Kraft mac 'n' cheese.

14: Worst sandwich - Quiznos Classic Italian (large). 1,528 calories, 92 g fat, 4,604 mg sodium, 110 g carbs. A large homemade sandwich would more likely provided about 500 calories.

13: Worst salad - On the Border Grande Taco Salad with Taco Beef. 1,450 calories, 102 g fat, 78 g carbs, 2,410 mg sodium. This isn't an anomaly: Five different On the Border salads on the menu contain more than 1, 100 calories each.

12: Worst burger - Carl's Jr. (Hardee's on East Coast) Double Six Dollar Burger. 1,520 calories! , 111g fat. Carl's Jr. Brags it's home to this enormous sandwich, but the restaurant chain also provides convenient nutrition info on its Web site -- so ignorance is no excuse for eating it.

11: Worst steak - Lonestar 20 oz T-bone. 1,540 calories, 124g fat. Add a baked potato and Lonestar's Signature Lettuce Wedge, and this is a 2,700 calorie blowout.

10: Worst breakfast - Bob Evans Caramel Banana Pecan Cream Stacked and Stuffed hotcakes. 1,540 calories, 77 g fat (9 g Trans fat), 198 g carbs, 109 g sugar. 9: Worst dessert - Chili's Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream. 1,600 calories, 78 g fat, 215 g carbs. Would you eat a Big Mac for dessert? How about three? That's the calorie equivalent of this decadent dish. Clearly, Chili's customers get their money's worth.

8: Worst Chinese entree - P.F Chang's Pork Lo Mein. 1,820 calories, 127 g fat,! 95 g carbs. The fat content in this dish alone provides more than 1,100 calories. And you'd have to eat almost five servings of pasta to match the number of carbs it contains. Now, do you really need five servings of pasta?

7: Worst chicken entree - Chili's Honey Chipotle Crispers with Chipotle Sauce. 2,040 calories, 99 g fat, 240 g carbs. 'Crispers' refers to an extra thick layer of break crumbs that soak up oil and adds unnecessary calories and carbs to these glorified chicken strips.

6: Worst fish entree - On the Border Dos XX Fish Tacos with Rice and Beans. 2,100 calories, 130 g fat, 169 g carbs, 4,700 mg sodium. Perhaps the most misleadingly named dish in America : A dozen crunchy tacos from Taco Bell will saddle you with fewer calories.

5: Worst pizza - Uno Chicago Grill Chicago Classic Deep Dish Pizza. 2,310 calories, 162 g fat, 123 g carbs, 4,470 mg sodium. Downing this 'personal' pizza is equivalent to eating 18 slices of Domino's Crunchy Thin Crust cheese pizza.

I live in Northern Canada... and hence have not heard of most of those restaurants... and I am GLAD!! yuck. lol
  • OMG!!!!

Although i wasn't totally surprised that chain restaurants serve ginormous portions of unhealthy food, it was the comparisons that really hit home! 8 pints of ice cream in 1 smoothie?!?

Give me 4 pints and call it a day

    Thanks for sharing

Luckily I haven't ever eaten anything listed except for the Chocolate chip paradise pie. That thing is AMAZING. I have only ever eaten half though... and trust me it was worth the 800 calories :)

As i said before, it might be a little drastic but i think it should be illigal .. or have someking of a warning like on cigarette packets..
If people were to know,,, they would avoid it (well i hope . lol) and then the restaurants would offers better options... they can do it with cigarettes. why not with food ? but i have a feeling that the fast food lobist are a too powerfull... wonder how mc donalds would like .. i think the industry likes us fat.

anyway .. it makes me mad...

at least, we know whats bad for us ......

Um, actually McDonalds puts the calorie count of the food right on the packaging now. And the other nutritional info. On the boxes - it is on the bottom. Didn't check out the fries - think on the side. And I think it is on the wrappers for food that isn't boxed. Plus, you can get a nutritional info sheet at every McD's restaurant and their on-line nutritional thingy (see, I'm a tekkie  ) is very detailed and covers it quite well.

i meant, imagine if they had to put a warning, this foog is bad for you type of thing, i know the nutritional value is there, but some people just have no idea what is a calorie and what high fat content is and what it does for you.

The information should be available I agree but as for making it illegal, I think that's a stretch. Does anyone watch "King of the Hill" on TV? There is an episode called "Trans-Fascism" at http://www.fox.com/fod/player.htm?show=kingofthehill

This episode is about banning trans-fats in their little town. It's too funny and very apt.

I have to say the Bloomin onion thing is delish. My grandma bought some thiing with all these recipes and all the tools needed to make one
LOL, Thank God it is way too time consuming and messy. It ended up in a box for the garage sale.
Thanks for that post! Very interesting.

Hungry Girl (www.hungrygirl.com) has tons of fast food swap outs... haven't tried the onion rings but here is the recipe and I might give it a try tonight -- all this talk about bloomin onions is making me NEED SOME!

    Ingredients:
    1 large onion
    1/4 cup original Egg Beaters
1/2 cup crushed Fiber One Cereal

    Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut edges off onion, and remove outer layer. Cut onion into 1/2 inch wide slices, and separate into rings. Next, fill a small bowl (just large enough for onion rings to fit in) with Egg Beaters. Using a blender or food processor, grind Fiber One cereal to a breadcrumb-like consistency. Pour crumbs onto a small dish. One by one, coat each ring in egg and then crumbs (give each ring a shake after the egg bath). Place on an oven-safe baking dish sprayed with nonstick spray. Cook for 20-25 minutes, flipping rings over about halfway through. Serves one.

Serving Size: 15 rings; one recipe
    Calories: 153. Fat: 1g; Sodium: 225mg; Carbs: 41g; Fiber: 16g; Sugars: 7g; Protein: 9g

How in the world do they get so many calories into these things? I have made the homemade version of several of these things, they taste basically the same, and while not exactly health food they don't have nearly as many calories.
Someone shared the good idea that if you are going to have these things though either share and/or ask for a to go box before you even start so you can keep out a small portion and box up the rest. Just don't eat the contents of the whole box when you get home (done that - :blushing: )

It's amazing what is in some of this food. That's why I always try to go online before going out and trying to plan my menu. Other times you just have to use common sense. I say, once in a GREAT while is not going to kill you or demolish your weight loss, but eating this crap all the time will definitely add up.

This jerk I use to date, we would go out to dinner almost every night and going to places like Outback, Chili's, Olive Garden and such. I gain LOTS of weight at that time. It's not worth it.

They didn't list PF Changs Great Wall of Chocolate....over 2100 calories!

I have learned to research the restaurants and pick out what I am going to eat before we leave home....what a shock it was to learn that items on the menu I thought were "good" were loaded with calories. (Especially those big salads.)

Say what you like about McDonald's, but I really appreciate the restaurants that provide nutrition information. Just try to find info for Applebee's or Fudrucker's. On the other hand, Red Robin's site is actually kind of fun - you can add and subtract toppings and sides and it will recalculate the nutrition info for you. Of course, I learned my favorite Whiskey River BBQ burger is over 1100 calories!

When I joined MFP back in January, it was the middle of basketball season. We have season tickets and even travel to some of the away games - so we end up eating out once or twice a week. But I have managed to lose 23 lbs. by making better choices, taking half my order home and increasing my exercise on "eat out" days. :drinker:
