Okay, going with the family to a chinese buffet tonight for dinner. Any specific dishes that are do's or don'ts? And what about Sushi? I adore it but I have no idea if that's better for me than getting regular chinese? HELP????? :ohwell:

I stick to the Hibachi grill ---> rice, veggies, shrimp, easy to track. I also log 1 tbsp of oil per plate.
I'm not really a fan of sushi.0 -
ok the first thing that yelled red flag was the word buffet. lol good luck with that. they are hard for me.
I would like to know too though for ordering chinese.0 -
Not my field sorry. I didn't want to be that person that views and no response. LOL.0

Yeah buffets aren't my forte either, but they all want to go and I don't want to be a spoilsport0

If your concerns are sodium, I wouldn't have any soups, appetizers, or anything prepared with a sauce. They are mostly drenched in sodium. In general, I'd also stay away from sushi, but if you do partake, avoid salty fish and the soy sauce, even the "low sodium" version.
What's good in a Chinese restaurant is anything steamed, or sauteed just in oil, with maybe some ginger, pepper, or garlic for taste. You might therefore want to call ahead to see if they can accommodate you since this is a buffet affair.
Fortune cookie isn't bad -- only 30 calories and 22mg sodium
As far as calories go, this WebMD article offers some guidance:

I personally would avoid anything deep fried, try to pick items with lots of veggies, and take little to no white rice - I'd rather save my rice portion for the sushi. I eat it regularly once a week anyway, and it can be quite delicious/healthy/lower cal depending on your selection.0

Weight Watchers says chicken and broccoli is the best choice you can make and that you should opt for brown (not fried) rice over white.
Good luck!0 -
Thanks for the replies! I'm definitely going for the sushi. I never put sauces on them so that's good. I love broccoli so that's great too. I just hope I can figure out how to log it. But I'll just kick my own *kitten* at the gym tonight and call it even I guess. Going to check out that webMD link though too!0

Calorie wise a good choice -- 375 calories with the usual brown sauce.
Sodium wise, however, it's high like most prepared Chinese food -- 1371 mg/sodium. That's more than half the daily requirement per MFP, and almost the entire daily sodium requirement for anyone on a salt restricted diet. The culprit, of course is the brown sauce, not the chicken or broccoli.0 -
Honestly, when I go Chinese buffet, I search "Chinese buffet" in MFP's food database and add one extra plate than I actually ate, even though it won't be exactly accurate, and I allow myself whatever food I want, as long as I don't fill my plates a ridiculous amount.0
