My boss just bought a beta fish and wanted to transfer it from store container to its new fishbowl. Someone said that she should not use a net but just her hand. She did not want to and I volunteered. All this is after I had spent the morning spouting all my knowledge of fish and how all my beta fishes had lived for 2 years or more. Well, I poured the fish into my hand and it promptly flopped out onto her desk. All 4 women in the room started yelling to grab it. I tried to pick it up and it flopped out AGAIN! At this point my co workers said "well its not going to survive this!" We finally got the fish into its new home but i'm worried that its scarred for life and I don't want to be the "fish killer" lol Oh dear....

Chances are you just stressed it out a bit, but unless it was out of the water too long or you throttled it, I doubt it'll die. If they're well taken care of then something like that won't hurt them. It may not like you for a while, though.

It's always that much more stressful taking care of someone else's pet.

i had a beta fish that my cat knocked out of his fish bowl and smucked down on the wood floor and once i found him (thought the cat got a fish for lunch) he was flopping around, still lived another year after that. (where the cat could no longer get to him)

He should be fine, fish have the memory of a gnat (so I've heard). We had an oscar fish years ago that while I was doing a water change, jumped out of the tank and flopped all the way down the hallway. I FREAKED OUT!!!!!!! Thank God hubby was home to grab him LOL

This made me LOL....so why aren't you supposed to use a net? I always use one.

The betta fish in question is my 6yr old daughter's. It is so funny, I got it a leaf hammock and it lays in it all day. I thought it was sick at first, because it was always laying on it's side or listing one direction or the other. Fish experts told me no, it's just lazy and suggested the hammock. It loves it!

Anyway, we clean his cube every weekend and I transfer him to the cup and back in the net. He's doing just fine!

Although I have to confess I have a fear of dropping him into the sink and on down into the garbage disposal :noway: .

If it makes you feel any better I have two awful fish stories. Many years ago I offered to help my brother and clean out his fish bowl (yes, before everyone had aquariums). The silly fish got away from me and flopped down the garbage disposal. I felt awful. I substituted another one and never told him. I don't think he ever found out. Apparently I didn't learn my lesson. Soon after one of my teachers at high school asked three of us students to take care of his fish (expensive ones in aquariums) while he and his family were on vacation I don't know what happened but they got sick. We panicked and called a fish store and got advice. We had to take the fish out and put them in other containers and clean the aquariums. While trying to drain the water out we used a piece of hose and had to suck on it to get the water started. A mouthful of absolutely gross nasty fish water. However, the fish made it. Thank goodness. We would have been fish killers and he would have probably flunked us too. I'm sure the fish will be okay. They are sturdy little buggers.
