First of all, I know this is a health and fitness website but I could really use some advise. I dare not look online as I will probably come away thinking I have an obscure untreatable disease and not sleep tonight!

I will be making an appointment with my GP but I cannot get one until Friday. Until then..advise please!

I have 2 large lumps just below my ear. They are very hard and very very sore. They appear to have got worse, they are literally throbbing now and I have been getting headaches too. They don't move around so I know they are not cysts. I know it's wierd and maybe sounds a little gross but I would like some idea of what they are for peace of mind really!

Thanks :0

    How large are we talking?

Could just be spider bites or sebaceous cysts..

Neither are serious problems, but a sevaceous cyst will need to be cut out if it bothers you.

    I'm not a physician though.

They're probably lymph nodes... those suckers hurt if they swell and the more you touch them the worse they get.

Yep probably lymph nodes! You may be fighting off an infection and they get soooo sore if you mess with them and can be rock hard also.

If you really want peace of mind and are scared..........or that much in pain........I'd go into a walk in clinic........might not feel very good being in a place youve never been in to see someone you are unfamiliar with, but it might help the anxiety/pain over the whole ordeal.

I once had an issue concerning something just as bad.........no lumps or anything.......bleeding from somewhere I shouldn't have been without anything happening to me except for a high fever........turned out, whatever I had to eat, I got food poisoning........

(Not a doctor), but I agree with the previous poster that said Lymph nodes. Wouldn't worry too much until you've seen your doctor, they can get swollen from all sorts of causes from minor (infections, colds, mono etc.) to more serious. Chances are you'll just come home with an antibiotic.

Sound like zits or mossy/insect bites. Spider bites are often very hard. Nothing to worry about, just body's normal immune reaction to them.

    Lymph nodes.
  • I agree that it's probably lymph nodes. If you have allergies, this time of year is really tough or it could be an infection. If you are really worried, go to a walk-in clinic (get a referral from someone you know; not all walk-in clinics are created equal).

Agreed. I actually had a similar problem a few months back. My lymph nodes were incredibly inflamed. She sent me home with some antibiotics. :) Were you sick recently? Or maybe had an infection you weren't aware of..? That's what she asked me.

Also the lymph nodes below your ear is also one that gets EASILY irritated when touched or squeezed. So if you're messing with it (which most people - I did. It feels weird!) stop it! :) Good luck at your doctor's appointment!

I am a nurse and I would go to urgent care or minute clinic if you can. You should NOT be getting headaches from spider bites inflamed lymph.

Sorry you can't get into the dr before Friday. Hopefully it's just one of the things mentioned. Good luck and I hope this week goes quickly for you! Hope you hear good news! :)

    LOL

Girl, go to the Emergency Room. I know that you may feel like your over reacting/under reacting, second guessing yourself...all that. That's what I do even if its sometime serious...like yours. There is never a reason to to put your health in jeopardy like that. Plus, most hospitals have the facilities to get test results done right then and back within minutes/hours. Its hands down better then waiting for a doctor, him/her sending you to a specialist, getting outsourced for tests....cut all that out and just go get it done. Let us know how it goes!

They're just your lymph nodes, everyone who said it before hit it right on the head. Like someone said, your body could be fighting an infection, mine flare up sometimes if I change earrings. You have nothing to worry about. :)

You're one of the few chosen to start our species over when the zombie apocalypse comes. Aliens embedded a tracker inside you to make sure you're safe.

Could be mono or something to do with the tonsils/ear tubes.

I had a viral meningitis last year that cause similar symptoms but not over huge lymph nodes. :D

I'd suggest walk in clinic, especially with headache etc. Good luck.

My lymph nodes swell in the spring and summers and they hurt like none other. Allergies and colds that I just can't fight off are usually the source. My doctor wasn't at all concerned when he took a look at mine. I wouldn't panic as they are probably just inflamed nodes. I am not a doctor but having had experience with these, I can say that they hurt and are scary but benign.
