Can you lift at home?

I'm wanting to start lifting for strength and tone but I want to do it at home. I've got 3 kiddos including a high needs baby and the gym just doesn't work for me. I got kicked out a couple of years ago because my then youngest screamed bloody murder the entire time so they said we could no longer come.

So...how can I start lifting at home? What is this book about lifting a lot of you ladies swear by? Give me all your input!

I HATE weight lifting at the gym - the vibe is always just kinda gross. Lots of huge dudes wearing too much cologne and staring at themselves (or drooling over the women). I do all my strength training at home - bought a bunch of free weights/dumbells and resistance bands, and I use the p90x strength training DVDs and/or program book.

There are many good lifting tips you can find on YouTube.

Getting a set of dumbells is a good start. Usually ones hard to get a good 8 reps out of using proper form.

As for YouTube, I like the guy on "sixpackshortcuts" and his method should work for both men and women. P90X is good too, but usually for those fairly fit to begin with.

The New Rules of Lifting for Women is the book you're referring to.

I would also check out Jillian Michaels "30 Day Shred" and "Ripped in 30". Best of luck!
  • I meet with a trainer every few months and he gives me routines that I can do at home. Then I do them on my own at home. I only have free weights and a stability ball. I work full time and have a toddler, so this works really well!

    Good to know! Thanks :)

Yes! New Rules of Lifting for Women....that's it. Now I just need to scour Craigslist and get some weights. I've been doing all the Jillian DVD's (Shred and Ripped) but want to incorporate heavy lifting as well.
