How many calories would you say?

Last night at spinning I wore my HRM. The bike also keeps track of heart rate and calories burned. It actually knows your weight from the seat. It showed that I had burned 241 calories. My HRM showed 415. The instructor said that I should take a number halfway between the two. My thought is that my HRM has more information about me and is more accurate. Any thoughts?

Go with the low number and you're safe.

    I'd use the harmonic mean.

Normally exercise equipment is preprogrammed for someone that is 150lbs. So it is giving an estimate based on the average fit person. Your HRM is programmed to your unique stats...Your HRM is correct. Biking/spinning burns crazy calories!!

If you have a GOOD hrm, with a chest strap where you can program your height, weight, gender, age, v02 max etc... I would use the HRM. If you have a cheapie without a chest strap, I'd go with the machine.

Can't go wrong by averaging the two numbers.

If this was a spin class I would say you burned more then around 200 calories! Your heartrate moniter would have a better reading, but you may want to go in between not to over eat.

Thanks for all the info. I really think that I am going to stay with what my HRM says. jillcwhite, this is a spinning class. A tough one. I usually can not talk during it and at times have trouble breathing. It is a hard workout. But, I love it as it does burn so many calories and I am finally losing weight. So, I am thinking that only 200 calories for an hour of it is just too little.

I had my instructor change her mind this week. The HRM on the bike went crazy. 120 to 175 and bouncing all over between these two numbers. So, it certainly isn't working right. Plus, I got to thinking.....the bike seat may not be weighing me accurately because of all the standing and hovering that I do. So, I am definately going to go with my own HRM.
