ok, so if i were to start this routine, how will i know how many calories i burn? I do have a hrm ( no chest strap) but i just for see me pushing my button constantly to be effective? how can i get a idea of what i am getting out of it then?

I'm not sure what you are asking. If you have a HRM it should calculate your burn but it depends on if you properly programed it or not. I went to a gym and they tested me and input my starting information. So I believe my HRM to be accurate. I also then calculated my resting metabolism to see what my body needs every day. Once you have all that information and track what you eat on MFP you can make things happen or understand why they are not happening.0

without a chest strap your calories wont be accurate. also even with a chest strap it wont be super accurate with HIIT. from what i noticed with my HRM they work great with steady heart beats, gradual increases and decreases, but my polar would go NUTS with HIIT. Sometimes it would register my heart rate as 00 (not possible), sometimes what it should be, and other times as high as 250 (also impossible) . i didnt really worry about it because the calories you burn during a 15 minute HIIT session is pretty minimal. the after burn you get for an hour or so after finishing up is when the real magic happens0

what i wanted to know is how many calories i would burn approx b/c yes i do have a hrm but it doesn't have a chest strap. So i have to put 2 fingers on it for a few seconds to get a reading, sometimes it takes longer to get a reading then you would like. So with me constantly changing pace doing hiit i wouldn't have that "time" to get my reading, do you know what i mean? I can't keep stopping in between each time i go up and down to get a heart rate for it to be the most accurate reading.. so how can i roughly figure out how many calories i would burn?0

excellent, thanks for that answer. you posted at the same time so i didn't see your response before i posted my other one... i was just wondering if i were to do it, i guess it's something that i just wouldn't log for my daily exercise then right? i would do 20 min of it and that's that. but if i do any other work outs then i would log it...0 -
I agree - a HRM wouldn't be much use with HIIT as the algorithm they use is based on continuous activity. Also, by definition, with HIIT there are periods when you'd not be exercising (or exercising much less intensely) yet because your heart would be pounding it would overestimate the calorie burn as it gauges calorie burn based on heart rate, not on what you're actually doing or not doing.
I rarely log HIIT as the numbers are generally so small. But if I do, I generally use the rule of thumb that for me I seem to burn around 15 cals a minute if I'm doing something very tough. If I've done 10 mins of total work (not counting the rest) then I just log it as 150. If I've been having active rests between hard work then I might log it as 200. It's all rule of thumb and doesn't take the after burn into account either, but it's something, I suppose.0 -
thx. i think if i do start to do it, i won't even bother to log it. I'll consider it the exercise that i am not getting right now that i should be or used to get...0
