This website doesn't account for the calories needed / burned during breast feeding... does anyone have any advice as to how one should account for that?

  • I would like to know this as well! I do know that generally a breastfeeding mom needs an extra 300 calories a day...so I am thinking of just adding that in myself...
  • Actually I just found this page (on a site I use quite often!) about caloric needs of breastfeeding moms: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-calories-fluids.html
    Hope this helps!

Hi, they actually have it listed in food and it deducts the calories burned from breastfeeding from your food total. There all lots of different options to choose from. EX - a small child, or older child which will have different amounts of calories.

    Hope that helps!

I think it depends on your body and how old your baby is versus the hard fast rule of just adding 500 more calories for nursing.

After having my baby, I was losing rather fast but several months in to it, I started plateauing while consuming around 1,500 calories a day. I'm short and have lowered my calorie intake in order to lose one pound a week. My daughter is a bit older now (almost 11 months) and seems satisfied after nursing (even though my supply has gone down) and is still gaiing weight so it doesn't seem to be an issue of me eating less.

You might just have to play around with the numbers to see what's a comfortable amount for you to lose one pound a week.

Wow. Thanks so much for the tip. I love how it can calculate per oz.

I'm exclusively breastfeeding my 4 month old and in the food menu they have an option for that which takes off -500. Once he starts on solids (in 2 months) I'll have to choose another option, but so far it has been nice!

Also, make sure to get enough water, which is especially important while breastfeeding!! :drinker:
