Whataburger's Chop House Cheddar Burger

In addition to the Bacon Cheesy Potato Burrito from Taco Bell, a new item has been on my radar. Whataburger just rolled out its new Chop House Cheddar Burger. It comes with two angus beef patties, shredded cheddar cheese, bacon, sauteed onions and a creamy steak sauce. Based on that description alone, I was all in!

For you Yankees, Whataburger is unique to Texas and maybe its neighboring states (it may extend further, I just don't know). You don't go there for a cheap burger. Historically, Whataburger has always been on the high end of the $$ menu and while their burgers are good, its not too often I want to put down $5 for a hamburger when I can get a whole combo meal at McD's or Burger King for that same $5. Granted, their burgers are somewhat larger than those other outfits but when I can get two double cheeseburgers for $2 at McD's... well you know what I'm sayin'.

Nevertheless, I had to have one these puppies but learning from my combo meal mistake at Taco Bell yesterday, I went in with bottled water and ordered the hamburger only - no combo. I put down my $5.94 (burger only, mind you) and waited.

I was soon rewarded with a hot wrapped burger ready for conquest. I unwrapped it to find a burger that looked like it had been through a press - all smashed down so that the bread hid the two patties and all the fixins. And, it wasn't as big as I anticipated - not for $6. Oh well, so much for presentation and size. How did it taste, that's what mattered to me. I begin to partake of this fastfood fat producer and found my mouth watering from the combination of flavors in my mouth. The creamy steak sauce dripped over my fingers so often I needed extra napkins.

I took my time eating this - all 1170 calories of it. I had a light breakfast so I'm still within my daily calorie intake but I have to hope this burger will carry me through a light dinner.

I give the Chop House Cheddar Burger two thumbs up.

Just a tip, you need baby wipes for the sauce...napkins don't cut it

Thank you for your delightful insight, to what sounds like an overpriced burger that I'll never try! We do have a Whataburger in La as well. Never been there. Now my question is, is this going to be a trend? Are you going to start giving us a review on all new items tasted? If so, will you take requests?

No, not really a trend. I just had the burrito and this burger on my radar this week. It could be a week, a month, if not more before you get another review. I was, however, known for my movie reviews on one of Shannon's forums.

Well, I am glad to hear that you were not disappointed on either! Job well done!

Whataburger had a patty melt that rocked about 7 months ago. I think their burgers are HUGE. We moved to Texas from Ohio 2 years ago and at first I fell in  with Whataburger. Now all I ask is why here in Texas do burger places not put ketchup on the burgers? I mean realy? I have never heard of such a thing. You order a burger and it comes with mustard. Cindy

Yeah, you're right. I think McD's is the only one that puts ketchup on its burgers.
Needless to say I found this shocking .

Thanks for the info. I'll have to remember this if I order a burger in Texas. Ketchup is an essential condiment for burgers.

Are you Bloody Mary from South Pacific?

Not since my junior year of high school. You win the prize for obscure musical theatre reference! I will now sing "Bali Hai" in your honour.

But seriously, I think you have a business opportunity here. There are women in my neighborhood who I don't think have eaten since the 1970s who would probably call a food porn 900 number.

Well, I'm in a WWII prison where they serve our food on metal plates.

I thought you lived in a van by the river... in Texas?
