hi i have a high protein diet. i have always been big on eating fish and chicken but i find i am not meeting my calories intake and carb recogmended intake. i use to fill the gap with snacks but i'm trying to cut them out. i still have to eat 1 large cookie just to hit my calorie intake. i dont want to keep eating junk food to get my calories and carb intake up. any tips? will my body go into starvation mode if i'm eating 1100 calories a day and it says i need to eat 1700 after being at the gym and what if i'm not eating all my carb allowance?

Snacking is not bad, just make sure you use the right snacks instead of junk food. Even having a cookie every now and then is alright as long as it fits into your macros. You can also use greek yogurt, peanut butter on veggies, protein bar, almonds or other kinds of nuts to get your calorie level up. I tend to mix those items with lots of fruits and veggies.

You don't need to eat junk to make up the calories, just eat more of what you are already eating.
  • thanks for the suggestion. i feel so defeated when i have to eat cookies to meet my goals. i work so hard in the gym to eat a cookie.

I looked at your diary and you should be eating more fruits and veggies instead of that cookie. I snack almost every hour with some sort of healthy snack, in addition to my 3 small meals.

I've added peanut butter, cheese, almonds & bananas to give me a boost in calories without feeling like I'm eating junk. I think I've got a pretty good balance of foods right now to meet my goals -- my diary is open if you'd like to peek.

add olive oil to soups and sauces
add avocado to salads and sandwiches
eat nut butters with fruit or crackers
    eat nuts/seeds as snacks
drink some calories (have a glass of juice in place of a glass of water)
    avoid lite and diet foods
    eat/drink high MF% milk products
    etc

    Switch to more whole foods to up your calories;

    Whole Milk
    Full fat cheese
    Single cream
    Olive Oil
    Coconut Oil
    Greek Yoghurt
    Nuts
    Nut Butter

You'll be hitting 1700 cals in no time! :-)

Also, since you only have about 20 lbs that you want to lose, you may want to consider changing your goals to lose 1 lb to 0.5 lb per week. 2 pounds per week is very difficult to achieve if you don't have that much to lose and can stall out your weight loss by having too high of a calorie deficit. My experience has been that the faster the weight comes off, the faster it comes back because you can't sustain that low of a calorie intake for long periods. I'm now trying to do it at a healthier pace and have my calories set so I don't feel like I'm restricted or on a 'diet' but instead am viewing it as a lifestyle change.

    Best of luck to you!

    I am increasing mine too.

Add 2 servings of fruit (strawberries, peaches, or half an apple) and 2 servings of vegetables (green beans, collards, or tomatoes).
Add a protein shake too (whey + skim 230 calories).
    Almonds (170 calories).
I also eat 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (130 calories)
Protein bar (Pure Protein 190 calories)
Cottage Cheese (110 calories, but I can only eat half of that at a time)
All of these options are lower carbs too

I was only doing 1200 and thought it would be hard to go higher....now I am hoping that I can stop at 1900!! I am trying to hit 150 protein and 100-120 carbs. I am just on Day 3 of this! :) Before I was leaving out the fruits and vegis, hitting 200 calories less and under 100 carbs.

Thank youuuuuuu for these! I am still stuck in the mindset of eating less to lose weight. I also need to hide my scale because I keep wanting to step on it and make sure that I am losing A huge problem of mine : /
