I know I am not the only one that has seen this and it bugs them.
Have you ever been in a gym and the person across/next to you is reading?!! Like a book or a magazine (even an e-reader)! I swear, the gym is NOT for reading. You are there to workout and push your body. You can read at home. It just irritates me to see someone who is just walking at a slow pace while reading. Is there really a point there???

Also, the gym I go to has a member computer so you can get on and log your exercise into whatever weight loss system you are using. Tonight a guy came into workout and brought his two teenage daughters. Not a big deal, I've seen other parents with teenagers in there and the teens have worked out right along side their parent. These girls bombarded the computer making it impossible for anyone else to use it browsing Facebook and YouTube and who knows what else. My sister, who's on MFP, found it annoying that she couldn't log in her exercise once she was done working out. If your children/teenagers are not going to workout with you, leave them at home!! Its that simple.

I don't have an issue with people reading at the gym. Everyone has their own goals and some aren't able to run or move very fast. whats the difference between watching the tv or listening to your music. sure you are moving faster but at least they are there getting exercise, better than just sitting home doing nothing. that's my view.

As for hogging the computer, if its there for the members to log their workouts then people, be it teenagers or adults shouldn't be hogging it for anything other than logging their workout.

My gf reads her Nook while she is on the treadmill. She hates cardio, so the ability to read at the same time helps motivate her. So, yes, I think you are way off-base with your judgment. As the previous poster has said, at least they are getting some exercise. Not everyone has the capacity or desire to go at maximum intensity. In fact, most weight loss programs emphasize going slow with longer duration.

Myself, I go way too hard to read so I just watch TV. But that's me. I love the cardio and begin to crave the buzz I get from busting my tail on a regular basis. For instance, today I did intervals where I alternated two minutes of "rest", which is 4 miles per hour on a flat treadmill with two minutes of hard effort, in this case 6.0 MPH on a 3 degree incline for 60 minutes total. My fitness level has improved to the degree that I can recover 40 BPM of heart rate between my max at the end of the hard interval and the end of the rest interval. For those unfamiliar with heart rate training, recovery amplitude and speed is clear indicator of fitness level.

As for some teens hogging the computer, that's completely rude and I would have complained to the gym.

I don't have a problem with people reading or using their phone at the gym. As long as they don't hog a bench or weight machine for too long. As for the computer issue, that would really annoy me. I would have gone up to a manager or someone who works there and share my thoughts about this issue.

    I read:
I burn about 1000 calories in one setting while doing elliptical. This helps me get my reading for class or work done.
I also read a fitness book
