My male min pin will be 6 in two months. Last night he had a seizure. He's had on once before about 5-7 months ago. He's eyes just got real big and his body shakes; he looks stuck. Last night... it started like that. Once it passed (like 1-2 minutes) he was back to normal. I took him for a short walk. When we came back in it started again...but worse! He couldn't stand and started flopping kinda like a fish or tourettes. I just held and pet him to keep him from hitting anything and told him everything would be OK. After it passed this time about 2-3 minutes he threw up everything in his stomach and just cuddle with me. I've read that this is common for his breed. I'm not sure what my next step should be. Should I take him to the vet? I read also that if they aren't occurring often sometimes the medicine can do worse than the seizure. Is there something I can do at home? Is there something I could have done to make these start happening? Something in my house? This is my baby!!! This was scary! Thank you so much for your time.

P.S. Please stick to Thumper's rule - "If you don't have anything nice to say...please don't say anything at all!"

Thank you!

Yes, he needs to see a vet. Today if at all possible. If they go into a series of seizures, they can die. Grande mal seizures can be controlled by medication.

Um... You should have taken your dog to the vet the first time. I'm sorry, but who the hell just sits there while their pet is having a seizure? Especially when you know nothing about it.

Get off the computer and take your pup to the vet now.

ETA: It was nothing you did. To my knowledge you can't just make them have a seizure.

He needs to see a vet ASAP. My parents dog Belle is on phenobarbitol to control her seizures (a beagle/jack russell mix, both of which are prone to seizures). If you don't get it under control now, it will only get worse. Belle is almost 10 and she was diagnosed around the time she was 4 or 5, so once they're under control they can lead a normal, healthy life. TAKE HIM TO A VET!!!!!!

Call your vet and schedule an appointment. They'll probably do bloodwork to rule out any other issues, and very likely prescribe an anti-seizure medication like phenobarbital, which is really inexpensive.

Not a vet, but was a vet tech for about five years and saw lots of pets with seizure issues. Most lived perfectly normal lives. Also, watch his sodium intake... it can aggravate the issue. Watch for those soft doggie-treats like Beggin Strips or Pupperoni, or table scraps like ham or hot dogs.

I called the vet the first time!! They told me to watch him that he could have just fallen or jumped off the sofa and landed funny. I'm not crazy. I did mention he was my baby. I even called the this morning. I was just checking for extra advise. You probably would have just sat there and talked them through it also. There's not much more you can do while it's happening. I at least tried to comfort him rather than just watching. I'm not heartless!

I also wonder if it has to do with the Dingo dog bones I've given him. The last time I gave him one he had his first episode but I didn't put the two together until last night when I gave him another.

Thank you all for the advise. I will NOT be ignoring this issue!

Sorry if I sound short but I'm in panic mode and feel a little under attack....I just need comfort and advise not words or statements that make me feel like I'm a bad pet owner.

No, actually I've had my dog do some freaky things as well, and have always taken him to the vet, even when it ended up costing me $600.00. I didn't call first, I jumped in my car and took him.

FWIW, I would have called the vet, too. And having worked for a vet, I know the vet would appreciate someone calling first, too. Even all the area e-vets recommend calling first, or when you're on your way, so they can prepare if it is going to be a major emergency.

You needed to have called the vet last night, directly after seizure. Please call now.

If he hasn't had regular checkups or visits with the vet, it is a good idea to take him in so that the vet can check for the usual things like infections, diseases, do shots and bloodwork, and if necessary x-rays for blockages.

Also it might be a good idea to keep a diary at least in the short term in case there are any external triggers. Record his food daily and structure his activity time. That way you can present this info to the vet.

How is your pup feeling today?

my dog got so excited that we came home, that she ended up choking on her saliva and keeled over and peed herself.. i did not hesitate, i took her to the emergency vet that night.

its your baby. if your human baby had a seizure wouldnt you take them to the emergency room? its the same.. rather be safe then sorry.

sadie was fine, she just got too excited, but i'm so glad i took her, just to be sure.

My dog is a dachshund and this has happened to him several times. Quite common actually for his breed.
Don't hold your dog if this happens again! If he's not on a carpeted surface, get a blanket for him to lay on so that he doesn't thrash around and hurt himself. Definitely don't scold him either if he accidentally pees/poops/vomits

Make sure there is plenty of water around for when he snaps out of it. Don't feed him any solid food. He could choke.

The first time it happened to my hairy son, I GRABBED THE PHONE RIGHT AWAY AND CALLED THE VET AS HE WAS HAVING AN EPISODE. I was in hysterics and screaming, and must have asked 100 times if I should take him in. She talked me through it, and told me that if it ever lasted for more than 10 minutes and if he ever had 2 seizures within 2 weeks, to take him to the emergency clinic right away. It's never been "a serious issue" (according to the specialists he's been to) to have him go on medication, but your vet may say otherwise, depending on your min pin's symptoms.

PLEASE check in with your vet. Even if they don't recommend taking him in right away as he's having a seizure, INSIST that they at least do a follow-up check up. Most pet owners consider their pets to be their children. If anything more major ever happened to my baby, I think I'd have a heart attack.

ETA: The only reason I didn't take him to the vet without calling the vet first is because my MIL's dog is diabetic and will have seizures sometimes, so I know how to handle the situation. His symptom's were typical of her dog's. I don't think I would have been able to drive him to the vet anyway, as I was shaking uncontrollably! I ended up calling my husband and making him race home from work (as I was on the other phone with the vet) just in case we had to drive him there. We both ended up taking the day off of work to monitor him.
