Just make sure it's legit and not one of those "get paid to stuff envelopes" ones where they send you the brochure with "reprint" rights and you can advertise for those suckers that the first guy didn't get.

There's tons of businesses you can do from home though. Tupperware's still around, there's candles, there's Amway, Regal... coming up blank on more but that's a start for that type.

You can also.. clean others homes.. or is it restricted in that you should do it only from your own home due to child-care etc?
    Raise a needed product.
Vermi-composting you can sell worms to all the folks who fish or at least the bait shops locally, sell the castings as garden addition etc.
Start plants / seeds. A pack of seeds costs you $0.99 depending on the item you may get a ton of seeds or just a few in the package but a well started plant will sell for $2-$3 depending on local competition meaning your initial $1 is tripled by selling one of them... selling more is just gravy
Raise rabbits, they have ... lets see Angora? that you brush and keep the fur brushed off like you do sheep for knitting etc. Their droppings are also great for the garden.
Raise chickens 3 hens may keep you in more eggs than you can use... a dozen hens would give you about 5 dozen eggs a week.

I am very lucky to have found a (mostly) work from home opportunity from my employer, but I had always planned to open my own family daycare. I just love babies and little kids, so that is always my back up plan if I ever get laid off.

I do freelance web development from home. I can't get a job in my field at our current duty station.

Just watch out for scams... you shouldn't have to pay money to start the job or where the product is useless and you just have to recruit people. Medical billing sounds like it could be good, but you'll probably have to pay for training of some form. I've never done it personally.

I work from home as a medical transcriptionist. I've been doing it 13 years and still love it, but would NOT recommend it to someone looking for a new career now. Voice recognition technology has completely changed the job field. I work for the biggest hospital in our region and about half our department was let go two years ago.

I think you're on a good path with coding and billing - I know a lot of former transcriptionists who've gone that route and love it. Plus, there's no new technology on the horizon (as far as I know!) that's waiting to take that job over. Always a bonus! If you are detail oriented and have a head for the medical jargon, you're definitely on a good path.

Keep in mind, a lot of places might not hire people to work from home right off the bat. Our hospital wanted, if I recall correctly, at least two years of experience in-house before they sent any of us home. It might be different for coding though, I don't know.

Working from home has really been a lifesaver for me. It's so nice to not have to scramble for childcare or call in work if the kiddos are too sick for school. And you really can't beat the dress code or the commute. Good luck to you!
  • I work from home too :) I am in marketing for nutritional products, which I personally enjoy because I changed my lifestyle..so it's a perfect sitution for me. Good Luck!

I'm a freelance writer working from home. Most of my clients are high producing realtors. I used to work in the construction/real estate industry so when I finally had enough of working for other people, I transitioned into writing in the same industry. It took about a year to do that.

And I'm working on my first novel in my free time :)

I consider myself a SAHM, but I sell on ebay, and etsy. I make jewerly, and my hubby buys storage units on the side and we make extra money that way.
