Childhood Obesity

The lack of exercise by today's youth has led to an increase in childhood obesity. Many children lead such sedentary lifestyles and consume such highly caloric foods that they are becoming morbidly obese at much younger ages. Many organizations are now promoting children and teens to get up and go play. Many new move related video games are being released. Both of these things are helping. The reason for my post is to encourage everyone as adults to lead by example. We should encourage our children to become more active and we can do this by becoming active with them. The more active our children become, the more calories they will burn and that means they will be able to indulge in all of the great foods that kids should be able to enjoy like ice cream, cake, cookies, pie, and candy without becoming morbidly obese and spending their young adult lives riddled with obesity related illnesses.

If I can add my 2 cents as an early childhood educator. Parents... please stop feeding your children over processed foods full of empty calories. Children need real food (not lunchables, uncrustables, chips, gogurts, fruit gummies or fruit cups) even if they are not overweight.
Edited to say that I don't disagree with the op... children should be able to enjoy treats... but their lunches and snacks should not be totally comprised of food that could be considered treats.0 -

Y'know, the 6 yr old living with my family at the moment brings a whole lot more crap home from school than she gets at home. If she has breakfast at school, they give her fruit loops. She always tries to get to eat breakfast there because at home she has to eat oatmeal. She only drinks sweetened milk at school even though she's happy to drink regular milk at home. They send extra food home over the weekend (because she's low-income, they just give bags to all of the low-income kids) and it's full of pop-tarts, candy, pudding, etc. It does get confiscated and she gets an egg on toast or something instead, but ... I'm just sayin' -- don't blame only the parents :P0 -
I agree, let's lead by example. I also feel that things such as video games, tv's and computers should be available to children in LIMITED parental suprivised quanitites. For example, I do not own a video gam console. If my children want one they will have to buy it themselves because I don't want those evil devices in my home.0
