I'm on nights so i'm bored. I often wonder if i make too much of running gadgets and aids, so i was intrigued to know what others have.
Feet- Mizuno trainers
Legs- Compression shorts knee length, under shorts or Ron Hills.
Torso- high Viz Karrimor short sleeved top at night. Compression shirt if cold with a vest on top and other variations
Head- Razor wrap around shades (only when sunny). Never where a hat irrates me!!
Hands- Karrimor running gloves.
Equipment- Polar F4 HRM watch and strap obviously.
Entertainment- Sony NWZW252B W Series Walkman 2 GB MP3 Player Water Resistant Headphones. Just the best.
Energy- Nothing yet have purchased some energy gels now i've started running for over an hour, just to try really.
Water- Only on very hot days (rare in blighty) i have Rucano water bottle full grip 500mls.
Anyway thanks

Shoes - Nike Lunarfly2s
Socks - Nike No-Show runners
Shorts - anything dri-fit
Top - usually Nike compression but optional in the summer (multi-task run with tanning)
Watch - Garmin 405 for street running and Garmin FR60 for track workouts (footpod and HRM)
Entertainment - iPod shuffle with Auvio agility behind the neck agility headband
Headgear - Nike ACG thermal for cold weather and lightweight dri-fit for hot weather (have to protect my head since I have very little hair )
I also have the Tanita BC-1000 to monitor my body comp measurements while training. Love how it syncs with my Garmin FR60 and Garmin Connect.
During the colder months, I wear cold weather Underarmour tights and thicker compression top. Also have some Nike gloves without the cuff that doesn't interfere with access to my watch. Can't remember the model name.
I'm thinking of getting a lightweight Camelbak for this summer for my long runs.0 -
I like this thread.
Feet- Mizuno trainers (yes, my favorite shoes ever! Unfortunately, they're more expensive than asics, which are also good, and I have to replace mine because they've got more than 500 miles as of today and I am starting to miss the support).
Legs- Old cross country shorts or soccer shorts that magically still fit.
Torso- Any shirt that fits. Now that I am starting to feel better in my body (and it's getting warmer) just my sports bra).
Head- Nada. Maybe sunglasses if I'm running in the afternoon.
Hands- This is south florida. I'm glad when my hands aren't sweating!
Equipment-ironman watch from timex. .
Entertainment- Sony NWZW252B W Series Walkman 2 GB (me too!)
Energy-I actually never ran with energy anything because they're so expensive! I do have an electrolyte drink on runs longer than 2 hours though
Water- For long runs, I asked for a water belt for Christmas. Got a new balance one for a 500 ml water bottle.0 -

Good deal! Will probably go ahead and go for the Camelbak. It gets mighty hot here in the South during the summer!0 -

I'm still working on purchasing better gear as I run more and more. (I have to buy in bits due to budget) Here's where I'm at:
Shoes - Nike Zoom Vomero - just got these and am in LOVE
Socks - Road Runner Brand Drymax - better socks are next on my list
Legs - various workout pants, want to get confident in my legs enough to wear compression tights. For now I'm saving for them.
Top - basic tees for short runs, Danskin long sleeve tech shirt for long runs. Still need some short sleeve tech tees
Equipment - Polar FT4, Nathan two bottle hydration belt (for my long runs), RunKeeper app on phone, BMF
Entertainment - at the gym, Netflix streaming movies. On the trail, playlist on phone, cheapie folding over-ear headphones
Head - Under Armor hat, mostly for keeping my hair out of my face than anything else
Hands - nothing
Energy - Clif Shot Bloks, long runs only. Usually one around mile 4 or 5 and another around mile 7 or 8. They're only about $1.50 a pack and I get three runs worth out of each pack, so that's worth it to me.0 -
Feet- Saucony Progrid Triumph 7s and Vibrams Five Fingers
Legs- Compression running capris/leggings
Torso- tech running shirts
Head- rubber band for my ponytail
Hands- nope, nada
Equipment- Garmin 110 with hrm
Entertainment- Ipod Touch with Bose earphones and a jammin' mix of running music.
Energy- gatorade
Water- in the car, a liter, for after the run.0 -
Feet- New Balance Trail. But it was essentially on sale, otherwise I would have stayed with my 6y.o sneakers :P
Legs- 2XU full length compression tights after martial arts training / as needed.
Torso- shirts/tshirts
Head- nothing fancy
Hands- nothing fancy
Equipment- Polar FT4
Entertainment- HTC desire + headphones works fine
Energy- Optimum Nutrition 100% whey protein Gold standard; and sugarfree V energy drink for long study nights
Water- yes please! Drink at least 1L every day, usually 2L0 -
Feet: New Balance whatever the latest model from their Motion Control / Stability for flat feet shoe is or Brooks Beast along with moisture wicking socks. I also wear and ankle brace to help support my right ankle which is tweaked from my cerebal palsy. I have been doing ankle strengthing excercises and began weaning myself off the need to use the brace.
Shirt: moisture wicking. I usually get some generic brand from Big & Tall stores being 6'3 and over 300+ lbs. 2XLT in size. I like being able to lift my arms over my head and not flashing my belly button to the world. I recently have been able to fit into just plain normal 2XL shirts. I also like Old Navy and New Balance brands. Their cuts are full and not slim and athletic. ` I wear both long sleeved and short sleeved.
Tops: If it's cold and or bad weather I wear a light track jacket too.
Bottoms: I usually have Adidas on they are 2XL in size. I have 2 pairs I got on sale both for 15$.
Hands: Light acrylic wool synthetic blend for cold days/nights.
Other Gear: Polar HRM FT40, Tuneband armband for my Android. Has all my music and Cardio Trainer app I use to log my runs.
Eyes: Contacts. I am blind but luckily I have contacts. I ran with glasses once in high school, NEVER. AGAIN. I haven't invested in a pair of sunglasses for really bright sunny days yet.0 -
Shoes : Some new balances, i dont know or care which. Gonna buy some trails soon
A water bottle, gloves, compression underwear didnt feel a need for these until i got up to the 18 mile mark, then they became imperative!
I have a nike windbreaker when its windy, and a terrible headtorch i need to replace
A HRM and a Garmin 110. Think i'll upgrade the garmin but i dont have the moneys
Hightech0 -
Feet- Runamocs or Merrel trail gloves outdoors, vibrams on the TM
Legs- sub zero running skirt or skins, 3/4 running tights or shorts
Torso- anything that wicks - good running bra
Head- hat my kid made in home ec class or a band wrapping over my ears
Hands- cheap cotton gloves I can wash the snot off of; knuckle lights in the winter
Equipment- Nothing outdoors - have a pulse watch but only use it on the TM doing intervals
Entertainment- The great outdoors outdoors, iPod indoors
Energy- Nuun
Water- Runs over 1 hour I use a camel back.
Arms- when the weather is in-between, I wear a wicking shirt and sleeves that I can remove once I am warm0 -
Feet: Brooks Dyad shoes... though I think I still prefer my old Nike Vomeros.
Socks: whatever pair of sports socks I pull out of the drawer, nothing special
Legs: in winter, 3/4 adidas tights or cotton knit capris, in summer (or nice winter days): running skirt from SkirtSports
Top: cotton tank top of some variation with a long sleeved thermal layer when I start out in winter, but I usually take it off after 10 mins or so.
Head: Headsweats cap or visor
Eyes: my regular glasses, I have prescription sunnies but they aren't very comfortable to wear.
Hands: skin. If it's chilly I pull down the sleeves of my thermal top.
Equipment: Garmin Forerunner 405 (Christmas pressie from my lovely husband, as were the shoes). Plus Runkeepr on my iPhone if I'm running intervals. The Garmin is much more accurate for distance though.
Entertainment: iPhone for music, audiobooks or podcasts.
Energy: for runs over about 1.5 hours I use gels or sultanans or apricot squares or jelly beans
Hydration: water (I tried Nuun but don't like the taste when it gets warm) in a 600ml water bottle in a Nathan waist belt (think it's called the triangle pack, or similar). Unless its really hot I don't take water for anything less than an hour.
My biggest challenge is usually to find running pants that have a pocket on the bum to carry my iPhone - my skirt has a pocket on the thigh that works really well.0 -
Hi... here I go
Bear in mind that I run in Saudi Arabia, so... that's HOT!
Feet- Adidas Response cushion 20 (waiting to go back to Spain to buy a new pair of good shoes for overpronator because these Adidas are just neutral)
Legs- Adidas / Kalenji (Decathlon) tights
Torso- Adidas running sleeveless shirt or Under Armour
Head- Adidas bandana (no need for hat because I mostly run in the nights)
Hands- My fingers!.
Equipment- Timex Ironman Global Trainer (with the chest belt) I strongly recommend this gadget!.
Entertainment- Ipod Classic 120Gb.
Energy- Nothing yet but I will buy gel for the 15+Km runs.
Water- Isotonic drink (sometimes commercial ones and sometimes home made).0 -
Love this thread, it's fascinating.
Feet - depending on length/purpose of run, Newton Lady Isaac S/Nike Lunaracer2/K-Swiss Kwicky Blade Light
Socks - for shorter runs, nothing special; for long runs or races, Hilly twinskins or MoreMile Tokyo compression socks (in ridiculous bright pink, just for kicks)
Legs - Nike Tech Fit Tights or Uniqlo running tights, but I have a pair of 2XU compression shorts on order to try!
Torso - Shock Absorber Run Bra, Mizuno long sleeved layer in winter, various selection of random technical T-shirts as it gets warmer; Adidas jersey zip hoody that gets tied round my waist after a mile, Nike Vapor Cyclone jacket for rainy/windy conditions
Head - just a hair tie
Hands - cheap Poundland fleece gloves in winter, but I mostly forget them
Equipment - Garmin FR60 with footpod (seem to have lost my HRM strap, boo), iPhone GPS app like Runkeeper or Nike+ GPS; tried Adidas MiCoach for a while but didn't really get on with it so well
Entertainment - Either old Nike Training Runs or Podrunner tunes on the iPhone in a Tuneband armband, with some broken headphones that suit the purpose
Energy - just started trying out Gu and Lucozade gels for runs over 7 miles, and bought a poncey SIS belt a few days ago to hold them!
Hydration - just bought some High5 Zero tabs to try. Handheld sB "loop?" plastic water bottle for runs over 1h30
Eyes - contact lenses. Definitely.0 -
Wow you guys buy a lot of stuff.0
-
Just getting back inot running so kinda plodding right now but:
Feet -Asic Kanbarra Gel
Socks - UltaMax Traithalon - love these.
Legs - Nike compression crops - I like having them over my knees just seems to help chafing
Torso - Under Armor Endurance sports bra
Head - if sunny I have a Red Sox Dri_Fit running hat. otherwise generic headband
Hands - nothing
Equipment - Garmin FR70 watch
Entertainment - IPod nano with armband
Energy - Redline Princess - high energy low sugar, multi flavor but avoid the Lime YECHH!!!
Hydration - Brita filltered bottle
Eyes - contact lenses.0 -
Shoes - Asics Nimbus Gel
Socks - Zulu
Legs - Asics compression capris with a back pocket for key and ipod and a pair of shorts to cover what others shouldn't be subjected to seeing
Top - an INCREDIBLE Asics sports bra and a short sleeve tech shirt from a former half marathon plus a long sleeve tech shirt if it's cold
Equipment - Polar F6, iPod, hydration belt with 4 - 10 oz bottles for hot days filled and frozen with water or Powerade on some half marathons I've used one of the bottle holders for my camera
Head - terrycloth sweat band - an absolute must - keeps my bangs out of the way and earphones in place
Hands - wick away gloves if it's cold ... put them away for the season
Energy - Powerade for longer runs
On Going Comfort - Body Glide - best invention since sliced bread0 -
I need to update my running gear LOL...I've just started out so do far:
Shoes: Nike Shox or On Cloudrunners
Legs: Leggings
Top: Nike Dri Fit anything
Head: Yankees Sweat band
Hands: It's starting to warm up sooo I'm going naked on the hands
Equipment: Nike + Sportband
Entertainment: Ipod Nano0 -
Feet- Currently Saucony ProGrid Mirage
Socks- *GOOD* socks (just back in from a run in some nice cushiony Balegas. Worth the extra money on good socks)
Legs- Compression shorts knee length, under shorts, calf compression sleeves after long runs
Torso- Compression shirt under high-visibility wicking shirt (I like the obnoxious yellows and Saucony's vizi-pro orange)
Head- Sunglasses if I'm out when it's sunny. Otherwise nothing.
Hands- None (I live in Florida, rarely need anything)
Equipment- Garmin Forerunner 305 with heart rate monitor,
Flashing LED light strap from Road Runner. Most of the time I'm running either ridiculously early in the morning (7 of my 9.5+ miles this morning were before the sun came up) or after the kids are in bed, so I like to be seen rather than run over.
Entertainment- iPod Touch Gen 3, Yurbuds earbuds, carried in an Armpocket arm band (it's big enough to keep my cell phone in with the iPod)
Energy- Gu energy gel. I prefer TriBerry and Mandarin Orange. Only use these on my weekend long runs.
Water- Camelback Delany II which carries a 24oz water bottle. Again, only carry this on my weekend long runs.0 -
Fun thread!
Feet - adidas Response Cushion, with metarsal pads for Morton's neuroma (ouch!)
Socks - Thorlo Experia socks
Legs - love my CEP compression calf sleeves for recovery. Wore them once when I ran a half marathon a weekend after my full marathon and they did wonders.
Torso - adidas sports bra (nothing special)
Arms - In chilly weatherPearl Izumi arm warmers - LOVE arm warmers. So easy to take off while running when the body heats up.
Head - if sunny a moisture wicking hat with visor, if cold a head band to cover my ears
Hands - if in the 30's or below I will wear gloves until my hands get hot
Equipment - Garmin 305 Forerunner
Entertainment - IPod nano with armband for 10+ miles... if less I usually go without. I find that I can do intervals and tempo runs better without music. I use simple Sony headphones - I can't stand the ear buds.
Energy - only use gels if my run is going to be over an hour. I like Accel Gels - a 4:1 mix of carbs and protein. They sit well on my stomach
Hydration - only water
Eyes - Rayban sunglass
Other:
Body Glide Anit-chafing around my bra strap/heart rate strap area. Not pretty in the summer!
SPI belt for long runs to carry my phone and chapstick
LED headlamp for the early morning runs
Pepper spray0 -
Fascinating responses thankyou all, food for thought especially on the energy gels and their usage. To clarify i have polar ft4, the f4's went out with the arc (2006).0

Wow you guys buy a lot of stuff.
Awhile back I would have thought the same thing. But once I started getting serious about my running and got on a training schedule for a 10-K and then started looking towards running my first Half Marathong (coming up on April 8) I started realizing that "gear" can make a difference.
Switching from a regular t-shirt to a tech tee is like having someone constantly towel you off. A regular t-shirt is going to stick you and get heavy with the weight of the sweat and it feels clammy. A tech shirt makes it so you hardly feel like you are sweating. The first time I ran with a tech shirt I thought I hadn't sweat at all because I never felt wet, then I realized that it was just the shirt doing it's job.
The shoes - the shoes I'm in the process of writing an entire blog about. It's night and day having gone from a pair of mid-range, budget shoes that I picked up at a DSW because the price and color were right to doing two running evaluations and getting fitted for a pair of shoes by people who know what they're doing. My stride and my pace improved on the very first run.
I never would have thought socks would make a difference, but they do. I started out running in just my regular everyday socks. Then I switched to doing just my weekly long runs in a pair of cheap "running" socks I found at Wal-Mart (again, budget reasons). But when I was trying on shoes after my evaluations, they gave me actual running socks to wear while trying the shoes on, and just the way my feet felt in the shoes felt better. So I bought the pairs that I could afford for now, but have my eye set on a some higher end ones I got to wear while trying on.
My feet actually stay in my shoes better with the running socks. And the small amount of arch support the socks I got offer can be felt as I run. I tried to put on a pair of my cheaping "running" socks on Thursday and I could feel the difference immediately. They didn't fit the same way on my feet, moved around inside the shoe, and I could feel every spot where I'd previously been getting blisters from my long runs.
And I mostly want the compression tights for the long runs as well. I've tried some on before and they just feel so darn good. Plus I've read a lot about how they can help make recovery faster and while I don't tend to have too many issues with leg recovery, I'd love to reduce it even more. Plus, I'm in the SF Bay Area and most of my races are in SF, so it's pretty cold for all of them. And the second I put on my first pair of compression tights I could feel how warm they were, which I think would help my race starts after I've been trying to keep warm in the cold, damp, SF air for an hour before the race actually begins.0 -
Ok.....
Feet- Asics Gel Nimbus
Legs- under armour compressions shorts (long runs only), have a variety of running tights, favourite pair for really cold weather is my "Running Room" one with a merino woll base layer, cool weather have 2XU compression tights, warmer weather I have 2XU tri shorts or an old pair of Umbro soccer shorts
Torso- Weather dependent, really cold weather top layer is my shell, polartec fleece, Asics Thermopolis half zip with a wicking base layer, cooler weather the half zip with shell (reflective 3M stripes), warm weather wicking t-shirt
Head- Ray Ban sunglasses, cold weather whatever toque is handiest, summer non-name running hat (keeps sweat out of my eyes)
Hands- Columbia thermal gloves in really cold weather, under armour gloves spring & fall
Equipment- Garmin Foreunner 610
Entertainment- none
Energy- Clif shots (gel) or bloks on long runs (over 2 hrs)
Water- rarely carry water, there are several drinking fountains on my long run route, will carry on long bike rides0 -
Other:
Body Glide Anit-chafing around my bra strap/heart rate strap area. Not pretty in the summer!
SPI belt for long runs to carry my phone and chapstick
LED headlamp for the early morning runs
Pepper spray
I realized on my run this morning that I didn't list any of my safety/emergency gear, other than my lights.
In/on my belt:
- bear spray
- personal alarm/flashlight
- my iphone, of course
- enough change for emergency water/food, bus, or phone
- wipes
- blister pads
- certain female items that the boys don't want to hear about
On my shoe:
- RoadID0 -
