Okay people if this has happened to you, I worked out all week ( I mean kicked *kitten*). I was way within my calorie intake, so I was eager to get on the scale. I am a female, I understand water weight gain, and your weight shifts blah, blah, blah. Right before I was about to throw my scale through the bathroom window, I googled (Jillian Michaels), it gave me hope, maybe it will help you if you came or come across this problem. "Weight often goes up before down. It could be added muscle, and you could just have collected some fluid in response to sore newly worked muscles. In other words, inflammation. Continue doing what you are doing and you will see progress. Stick to it. Don't get discouraged and quit, because then you know for sure you will eventually gain. Main thing is to keep your eyes focused ahead and know if you do the right things for your body, you will notice improvements soon". Yes I take as added muscle, I was a little sore during my work outs. If you have/had a similar problem like this feel free to post.

Yup I've had similar problem, I think anyone who works out has this issue one time or another especially strength training. When my scale goes and I know it shouldn't, I measure myself :)

Yep, I "gained" 4 lbs this week and I kicked *kitten* all week in the gym. Just water weight, I'm sure it will go down next week... I hope.

Glad to hear that (no not that you gained) but there is a reason behind this, yes I will do the same thing and weigh in next Sunday. Hopefully it will be a better number. Its odd I gained 4lbs too, I thought I was going nuts.

I hear ya...I have been kicking butt and taking names on my workouts...still quite sore from workouts earlier in the week. And have been pretty vigilant about recording what Im eating and I have actually gone up and down by 2 pounds this week. What helped is that In addition to weighing myself I also do measurements, so I am losing inches but not weight. Which is a pretty nice consolation prize :)

I gained this week as well, just under a pound, but like you I thought I would see the number go down because I met or exceeded my exercise goals and my eating was on target and based on a lot of really healthy foods. But my clothes are fitting better so I guess it is one of those times where the scale is not the best tool for recording my progress toward health and fitness . . .

I had the same thing happen. I worked out all week and being that I just started out I was really upset that I had gained 2 Ibs. I am glad to find out it is a normal thing...however I did lose an inch so It evens out. We just keep focused and always remember the scale is not the only thing we need to look at. Keep it up everyone.

Weird but true. I have often lost weight after eating more - and gained when I work out a lot.

I check the scale to ensure I am within 3-5 lbs, but I don't stress it too much and only base it on measurements and clothing fit now.

I'd like to lose another 5-8 lbs...but if I end up staying the same while losing an inch, I'll be happy. :)

Like I keep saying throw out that dam scale.
  • Oh yes! I gained 2 lbs last week and was beyond good with my cals and was working out daily! I did start doing lunges for strength training. I was so upset when I saw this!!! So I took my measurements. I had lost a total of 5 inches off my waist in the past month and only 7, well plus the two so 5 lbs total. I also took a before pic, then then took a few more pics again, 30 days in. I was shocked to see just how much my body had already changed!!!

Yes, I do believe it is water retention due to healing muscles. Someone else had also posted a pic of 5 lbs of fat vs 5 lbs of muscle. We always hear muscle weighs more than fat.. but it never actually sunk in for me til I saw this pic! The fat was HUGE and took up lots of space. Where the 5lbs of muscle was very small and lean! So I try to remember that. Well I may weigh the same or more.. but I'm shrinking!! AND getting toned.

So my advice is drink lots of water, take your measurements monthly, and take pics monthly to see your progress :)

Thanks y'all I totally am greatful you guys posted that you have gone through the same problem that I have today. You dont know how much this means to me, I truly was about to go nuts. Thanks.
  • I've been working out all week also, pushing myself harder than normal and doing a lot of extra cardio and sure enough I gained six pounds, but Its that time of the month and I've been drinking water non stop.. I'm just praying it goes back down.. I feel the difference and clothes are looser but that damn scale lol I cant help but to get a bit discouraged.

Like I keep saying throw out that dam scale.

I don't think you can tell someone to throw out the scale, it might help you to do that, but not everyone is the same. For me the scale tells me a lot, when I eat how I shouldn't it tells me so, if I eat right it tells me so, if I work out and gain, then my tape measure tells me. For me my scale motivates me to keep going so I will not throw it out.

I am going to keep the scale as well, however I am not going to get on every week or even bi weekly, once a month is great. I do need to see some type of progression. However I will use the measuring tape, see how my clothes fit differently and how I feel over all to determined my weight loss. Unfortunitly when you go to the Doctors office you get on the scale, they dont use a measuring tape. I feel ya.

I always gain before i lose. in the past three days i have gained three pounds and i know its because i have stepped up my workouts. its a little disappointing, but i know the scale WILL go down :) i actually thought i was the only one that this happened to. not that i'm glad others gain, but it does make me feel more 'normal' :)

I used to weigh regularly and if that DAM scale didn't show me the number I wanted to see it would set my mood for the day. I would be miserable. Life is too short to get so pissed about a #. No more scale for me.

This is happening to me too. I kicked butt this week at the gym and even almost hurt myself. I never thought of muscle inflammation being the cause of weight fluctuations. This gives me hope. Thanks. :)
