Greek yogurt

I keep seeing posts off and on about Greek yogurt--what is the difference? Where do you buy it? Is there a brand name etc to look for

If you're in the states, look for Fage brand. It's the best, IMHO.
Greek yogurt is strained, so it's very, very thick compared to what you might be used to. It also has a tangy taste that I love, but for some is an acquired taste. I love it with a tiny drizzle of honey and some chopped walnuts.
You can also strain your own plain yogurt, for a similar consistency. Just take a fine mesh strainer, put a paper towel in it, and drain it for an hour or so. . .you get something remarkably similar to greek yogurt.

I wondered, too -- my doctor just recommended it for the extra protein, to help balance my blood sugar.0

The one that I eat is Stonyfield Farm Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt. They have a few flavors. I do not recommend the plain one, not that good. I love the Honey and Blueberry ones. There is 13 protein with 0 fat and only 120 calories. I really like it. :bigsmile:

So if you did you're own, how would you know the nutritional values? Here in Winnipeg, the only place I could find it was a local Greek Market-and not cheap! I'd do my own, but not sure what kind to get, etc...0

I think greek yogurt is like a cross between plain yogurt and sour cream. I love it. Plain is very boring but I add a little honey or splenda and eat with fruit and/or Kashi Go Lean cereal. It is a great replacement for things you would use mayo or sour cream for...like salad dressings, chicken salad, dips, topping mexican food, etc. If you get low fat or non fat it will be low calories with high protein. I actually like to mix mine with a little cottage cheese and avacodo...yummy snack.
I have tried Fage and it is good but I get it from Trader Joe's because it's good and cheaper.0 -

I only eat Fage. I tried to drain my own and it is not near as thick or creamy as Fage.
I add stevia to it and a handful of berries (which ever ones are in season). I am going to go pick peaches this weekend, so I am going to dice some peaches up in it too.0 -

I like the Vanilla Oikos (they sell it at Walmart and it's cheaper). I like the 0% fat because it is not a thick and heavy as the full fat.vanilla flavored greek style. very good.0

I eat the same thing with berries added if they are in season. If berries are not in season, then I have a small piece of fruit that is in season that I get from my farmers market.0 -
Fage brand, Trader Joe's sells their own version that is very good. I buy the 0% fat one. Way less calories due to the straining process, 20 grams of protein, excellent source of calcium. I buy plain then add my own fruit! breakfast for around 200 to 225 calories. great as a sour cream substitute. only 1/4 th the calories of sour cream! 120 calories for a cup of greek yogurt, 60 calories to two tablespoons sour cream, there are 16 table spoons to one cup, so you do the math! 480 calories to a cup of sour cream. only 15 calories for two tablespoons of greek yogurt!

My Understanding is it is higher in protein, which makes sense if the lady said her doctor recommended it because of her diabetes. I dont' think straining regular yogurt will truly give the same thing as there is no way straining would increase the protein content.0 -

I usually buy it at BJ warehouse club. I found many years ago that it can be used in place of sour cream. This works great when you also have it mixed w/other stuff...tacos, baked potatos w/cheese, anything. I like it only because it actually keeps me satisfied longer than other yogurts...probably because of the increase protein.0

I have to hunt for it, only Trader Joes carries it in my city, but Costco is going to start putting it on the shelf soon, I harassed the Dairy Buyer for a month! He was very nice and promised!0 -

Straining doesn't per se increase the protein content. But if you have one cup of unstrained yogurt, it will have a higher percentage of water vs protein. One cup of strained yogurt thus has a higher percentage of protein b/c the water has been removed.0 -
actually the whey is what drains out, reducing the calories per ounce as well! you will not render the same amount you started with either! Start with Plain if you are going to do it, but it is way easier to just buy greek style yogurt because of the reduction after straining, you do not save that much anyway!0
