I'm considering a 10 day juice fast. It's been going through my mind for a month or so but I'm starting to think about it more seriously. So I have a few questions:

1) Can someone provide me with some good information on how? Juice recipes, recommended intake, etc.

2) What are the short term effects? Is it going to cause digestion issues or issues with my energy level?

3) What kind of results can I expect (from people who have done it). I don't just mean in lbs lost but also in overall feel.

4) Is there anyone out there with information on why or how it could be detrimental to my health?

I know there are 2 sides to every arguement...so I want to hear both.

And please...lets not let this turn into a thread full of nothing but bickering and insulting.

Find any peer reviewed clinical study (not an article, blog or opinion) showing that juice fasting will detox and increase metabolism. For as long as I've been in the industry and looked for actual research to back up "claims" from a scientific standpoint, I haven't found one.

Hmmm...that is interesting. I'll have to do some searching when I get home unless someone else can provide me with a link...

I look forward to reading responses to your questions, OP. I have one juice/day, along with my regular diet, and haven't noticed anything. The person who recommended my "recipe" told me I'd feel a lot more energetic but so far, I don't. Of course I know it's ridiculous to expect to feel anything with just one juice/day but that's been my experience.

    My recipe:
    3 carrots
    1 celery stalk
1 inch cube of fresh ginger
    1 handful of baby spinach
    1 gala apple, cored

It's pretty tasty and I do feel good knowing I'm getting unprocessed vegetable/fruit juice.

I also have the Juicing Bible which looks to be a decent juicing recipe book. It lists the health benefits of various fruits and vegetables and gives recipes meant to combat migraines, libido issues, etc. It's a fun read.

I did a mini juice fast recently. I felt really good, actually. I don't think I'd be able to do a whole week. Main problem for me is that I'm not a fan of the veggie tastes so I only like the ones with a lot of fruit in them. Then I just get SO much sugar. My bf, on the other hand, loves celery, carrots, etc and he could probably happily have juice for several days without getting so much sugar.

Like I said, felt good. Not too hungry. Calories were not too low at all (usually 1200-1500 depending on what juices I picked). Hard to get much protein, but for a few days it's probably not an issue. No serious digestive issues to report.

I'm with you on not liking veggie juice...I'd have to add a fair amount of fruit to cover up the veggie flavor.

I watched a documentary on this called "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead." They have a website that has a lot of good information, as well as some recipes! Some veggies are more potent than others! Apples are nice to cover up some of the flavor... as well as a banana, or even some lemons! I juice every once in awhile and I love it! Just need to tweak the recipes. ALSO... Ginger has a verrrrry strong taste... I tried it the first time and I really didn't like it.. so I don't use that anymore. Here is the website:

As a Registered Nurse I would not recommend this type of diet on its own. Likely to have lower energy levels as there are no complex carbohydrates or proteins. If you have impaired glucose tolerance/pre-diabetes then this type of drink will increase your blood sugars rapidly, and be too high. The amount of fibre if juicing whole fruit/vege and including pulp may cause increased gut activity and diarheoa.
If you're looking for the extra vitamins and minerals then adding 1-2 glasses as part of a well balanced diet is fine. Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add I hated the taste of my juice recipe at first but it didn't take long to like the flavor. I went from thinking it tastes like grass to actually liking the taste! So, if you buy a bunch of veggies and think you don't like them after the first glass don't toss them just stick with it.

Also, baby spinach is a good filler. You'll get healthy nutrients from it and it has such a mild flavor you won't taste it.

That's good to know. Btw...you get extra points for your username. Awesome.

I've seen it as well and was intrigued. I wasn't aware there was more info on the docuwebsite. I'll check it out at home tonight.
