Guilt

I burnt 938 cals yesterday in the gym so why do I feel guilty eating an Indian yesterday evening?

I know it's prob because it's not the healthest choice out there but I didn't get my usual cream-bases dish, got tandori chicken with a small portion of basmati rice, small amounf of tomato-bases sauce. ITs' the peshwari naan that got me.....had a good bit of it!

Still my poor tummy isn't reaping the benefits from it.......tummy cramps/bloating. Either because it was too late to eat an inidian or I really should stay away from the white rice. Been eating brown rice lately which I am loving. The bread doesn't help either.

Why do I feel guilty when I can fit a meal like this into my daily cals and I've earnt it?!!!!!!!!!

Maybe because you are fueling your body with simple healthy food and eating something cooked with a lot of mixed ingredients (even if it's not junk food) might cause trouble to your stomach..
I'm used to eat fruit, vegetables, lean meat, fish without dressings and cereals, oat without sugar and when I have a portion of pasta with sauce (it may be mushroom sauce, carbonara, or even pesto) I have cramps..
it can be the same for you!

You answered your own question - it wasn't the healthiest choice you could have made. In essence, you wiped out your efforts at the gym and the real question you have to answer is whether you went to the gym to get fit or went to the gym to be able to eat Indian. If it was to eat Indian, you wouldn't feel guilty.

Sorry - but there's no real way to sugarcoat that.

    True...true

But then aren't we supposed to eat back our exercise cals or at least a portion of them???? I know filing them with an indian takeaway is not the best option as it should be healthy food but I had a 938 cals to somehow eat a portion of back. It was late in the day and I had an excess. This is how I view it. I feel guilty as it wasn't a healthy choice. I exercise to keep fit/lose weight but a small part of it for me is so every now and again, I can have an indian/pizza etc. THat's just the way I can keep sane and keep me happy. I just feel guilty for it afterwards.

Well, let me ask you this: how did you come up with the 938 surplus calories? I will tell you this: if you are on an elliptical and in a moderate sweat and breathing deeply, you will burn on the order of 9 calories per minute. If you are going flat-out, sprinting, and the machine is ready to tip over you can , at MOST, burn about 13 calories a minute.

Do you really think you did 100 minutes of MODERATE exercise or 75 MINUTES of sprinting? You cannot believe those machine readouts, trust me. They are wildly optimistic and an advertising ploy. Look it up online, google "how many calories per minute do I burn" or something like that and you will see for yourself. I do P90X, which is an intense, boot-camp style workout that lasts about an hour and they are good for about 500 calories per session.

I would say this: until you have adapted to keep the dial on scale moving in a steady (1-2 lbs/week fat loss) trajectory, you have to eat clean and not cheat. You will know when it's okay to grab a pizza. As for now, keep to your target calories, don't log the exercise, and adjust your workout intensity and duration to achieve a realistic (0.5% per week) fat loss rate. Think of the gym as your gas pedal, step on it to increase your fat loss, and back off to decrease it, but keep eating the same.

3 small letters as to how I know I burnt 938 cals: HRM. Don't use the cals from the machines at all.

    I do a 15min cross trainer warm-up

    Weights/core exercises for 40mins

Then running on treadmill for 45mins, speed 9.3-9.7

That's how I know I burnt 938 cals. Edited to say, i know all the settings on my HRM are accuarate re my weight etc as I check them regularily.

If you did not steal the food from some hungry person, you have no reason to feel guilty....:noway:
It's food, it's meant to be eaten - that's what humans do....
You exercised, you ate, you probably pooped somewhere along the line - all human and no need for guilt

Eating back workout calories is not "wiping out your efforts".

MFP calculates already how much you should eat WITHOUT exercise to lose the desired amount checked.

Also the many spices in Indian food could upset your stomach along with the naan bread, (but it's so delicious),

The fact that you can enjoy food whilst being on a diet, you made good choices I mean, is fine.
That's what MFP is, it's not necessarily a diet but a WHOLE LIFESTYLE CHANGE.
Of course you're going to go out for take away once in a while.
    Sometimes you will over eat.
Does not mean you wiped out your efforts.

Maybe next time you have Indian if you feel like you mainly overate on the bread then boycott it next time maybe.

Also I giggled at the "ate an Indian" too

What 's that saying about being your own worst critic?.

You had Indian food, and maybe it wasn't the healthiest choice, but.....you did switch to tomato-based sauces and chose tandoori chicken - your willpower won out in those cases. Celebrate those little wins and don't de-rail yourself with negative self-talk.

Guilt is so pervasive in our society. It can be a great motivator, but if it just make you feel bad, it's no good! You EARNED that food! Maybe you had too much nan. Oops. Today is a new day, no need to feel guilty about yesterday. Just do it right next time! Don't let guilt hold you back from your weight loss dream!

A little bit of guilt/shame will keep you from running through the mall naked......too much will backfire and have you feeling like you are not good enough, or that you have 'fallen off' If you can burn calories like that consider that your weekly treat and just eat extra healthy for the rest of the week! Consider yourself HEALTHY!

Feeling guilt over what you eat is counterproductive. Enjoy life within reason. Everything in moderation!

I know, get me! I was totally proud of myself tbh.

I walk for say 2 mins, then run for 2+1/2 mins, then walk 1 min and then I start running for real at 9.3.

I find the first 5-8mins the hardest to get into my groove. I ran from 10-30mins, 1 min walk (did damage to my knees and ankles last year running so now I really really listen to my body and my right knee was niggling me so I walked for 1 min), then ran the rest of the time, upping the speed. Really really really proud of myself!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one to jump straight to cannibalism... The question then becomes: Would you feel more guilt if it were an American Indian or an actual Indian?

In all seriousness, though. What the others are saying about guilt being a wasted emotion is true. If you don't think that you made the right choice yesterday, learn from it and then move on. Try an Asian of some sort next time... (^.^)

Ethnic food almost always gives me slight bloating or cramping. Even if it isn't unhealthy. Something about the spices/sodium. Stop beating yourself up. And don't listen to *kitten*. You're allowed to eat what you want, even if that means being slightly less healthy once in a while.

Might I also add, I work for an Indian man and with two others. Many of our customers and vendors are Indian. In maybe 20, I've seen one fatty. One of the guys I work with is very thin and eats strictly Indian.

Edited to say: I think the speed settings on the treadmill here in Ireland and the US must be different. I think my speed of 9.3-9.7 must be your super duper fast. I ain't that good!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm only just after realising this now.

I was fast jogging, not sprinting.

You do realize that your HRM calories consumed is also accounting for the calories you would have burned had you NOT exercised, right? It is not excess calories, but total calories. That is to say that if your TDEE is 2400 calories, and during waking hours you normally burn 150 an hour and 50 an hour when asleep, you would have burned 300 calories in that two hour window no matter what.

Just to prove the point, turn on the calories function when you're watching TV - it will calculate calories burned at rest. That does not mean you've generated surplus calories you can eat.
