So, DW and I have been considering adding something a bit more intense than the walking/jogging we have been doing.

From what I am gathering from the forums here, P90X and 30DS seem to be two of the most popular. A good friend of mine gave me his copy of P90X the other day and we also have access to the Insanity DVDs, but I wanted to get some opinions on what people liked and what they didn't like about any of these programs and for people who have tried more than one of these--or all of them--which they preferred.

Thanks in advance for the help/advice/suggestions.

  • I am currently doing P90X. This is my 2nd round. I did my 1st round last summer and lost over 30 lbs. That was without really montioring my nutrition. I felt fantastic afterwards but sadly gained the weight back plus some.

I have also tried Insanity. Insanity is exactly that....insane. Not that P90X is a breeze but with the X you have strength and cardio workouts so it mixes it up quite a bit. With Insanity, it is pure cardio. Intense body weight workouts. I only got throught about a month of Insanity. But again, i wasn't monitoring my nutrition or anything. It was really tough.

I prefer the X. For me, i like the different workouts. I enjoy the strength workouts. I have seen really great gains in strength and my cardio routines are through the roof. Eventually i will try Insanity but i want to get a couple rounds of the X under my belt beforehand.

Done several rounds of P90X and currently on day 23 of Insanity with some 2nd workout lift days thrown in....I'm sadistic : )

With P90X you should have access to a pull up bar and dumbells for the full experience. Bands will work also but IMO more resitance is desirable.

Only your body resistance required for Insanity. I do recommend a HR monitor.

Really depends on your fitness level and goals. While both are modifiable that anyone can do I think Insanity is more of a jolt to the system especially if you are already familar with weight training . If you push yourself and follow along with only the breaks on the DVD then Insanity really gets your heart rate up.

Can't go wrong with either one if you follow the program.

I'm doing Insanity to get my cardio fitness level back up.

Well I did a full round of P90x Lean and am now doing a round of P90x and Insanity hybrid
I've also done all the workouts in Insanity previously. Both of them will give you great results if you stick with it.

I think from an overall perspective P90x is better for me because it mixes things up quite a bit. Each day is a different focus, which helps avoid boredom and helps give muscle groups a chance to rest.

My biggest issue with Insanity is it works the same part of your bodies with for the most part the same variety of moves. If you intend to follow the program that's doing almost the same thing 5+ days a week. Since it is also quite high impact that can put a lot of strain on your body and you don't get much of a chance to recover. That said it is very good cardio and you will be in amazing condition if you keep doing them.

Groovy. I think I'll move forward with P90X and see what happens. Thanks for the comments!
