NSV on the rowing machine

I had an NSV on the rowing machine today. I usually use it once a week, either to warmup before strength training. Or to do a couple of intervals (3 x 500M or 4 x 500M or 3 x 750) to see what my time was. The longest distance I rowed was 1250M straight.
Today after I finished my upper body workout, I planned to use the elliptical, but I realized I hadn't done a rowing sprint in a while. So I hopped on and started rowing.
I got to 500M on a pace that was a little challenging a few weeks ago. I thought, I am not working hard enough, let me pick up the pace. So I sped up a bit, and was still feeling OK and hit 1000M.
Last time I did 1000M straight at that pace, I was ready to move on to the next machine, but today I guess I had more energy, so I picked up the pace and hit 1500M.
This is the first time I ever rowed 1500M straight without a break. I was still feeling OK, so I thought, well I should just try to get to 2000, so I sped up a little more and hit 2000. I said, well I might as well try to get to 2500....
At 2200 I was getting pretty winded, so I decided to sprint for the last 250M. Happily, my 250M pace was 10% faster than the last time check! And I made it 2500M. It was definitely break time then.
Since I finally broke 2500M, I think I might try the rowing program here: http://thepeteplan.wordpress.com/beginner-training/
I definitely wasn't feeling like it was possible a few weeks ago, but now I think I just might be able to get to 5000M in a few more weeks!

Pete, of PetePlan fame, is the guy you need! Also search for PetePlan Lite on the C2 forum... loads of advice, motivation, challenges and support there.

If you like indoor rowing, you should totally try rowing in a real boat! I joined a rowing club last August, and I've fallen in love with the sport. It's kinda like ballet on water -- everything in sync, working hard, beautiful early mornings. It's really, really neat.
Also, it's way harder to wuss out on a workout when you're in a boat with several other people who are pulling like crazy!0 -

totally agree with this as I also used to be a ballet dancer! It is a little bit slow to start with tho, so if you want a good workout on the water you might be frustrated at first. However, I used find that a 2 hour recreational water session would burn loads of calories, more than doing a 10k on the rowing machine, according to my HR monitor - just lots of moving around, lifting the boat etc, as well as all the rowing.

This. I love rowing. I used to row at school and university, and trained as a coach 12 years ago, but where we live now there is no river, so I haven't done it in years now.0 -
There is a "Lake" in the middle of my city, I live around a mile from it. I know there are rowers there....once I get a litle better I'll have to try it.0

Small world, I row in Cambridge, UK but was over in Oakland at the beginning of the year.
Lake Merritt I'm guessing is the one you're referring too. Lake Merritt Rowing Club is a really nice club, very friendly so I wouldn't worry about waiting until you're the worlds best erger before you get in touch.
If you want the guys email address who gave me some lessons in a scull send me a message.
ps - watch out, this erging lark can become addictive! :-)0 -
Wohoo! I made it the 5000m today. Pete Plan here I come.0
