Hey ladies! I'm from Wales in the UK, am 18 years old, and will be starting up on strength training soon, I hope alongside my cardio. But, I've heard a lot about how great protein shakes/protein powders, and protein bars are to have at pre/post-workout. I'd like to maybe incorporate the powder into my smoothies, or have on their own. Would be great if they actually tasted nice too! haha
Oh, and I'm a student, so money isn't plentiful...
It's just a bit of a pain when I hear about all these great protein bars, or protein shakes...but tend to be in the US.

Any advice?

Myprotein.co.uk is great, they do samples for 99p so you can try out the flavours and find one you like before you buy a big pack, they are really cheap too compared to other places. Around £15 for 1kg, £30 for 2.5, a serving is 25g so works out £10 a month if you have one a day.

I've tried the impact whey which is nice, quite runny though just like flavoured milk (you can add xanthan gum to thicken which they also sell)
True whey is a little more expensive but it's really thick like a frijj milkshake.
The casein / milk protein is rank it doesnt mix in very well and tastes really powdery.

The choc / choc mint are totally delicious, raspberry is ok, vanilla can be too sweet depending what you like, I make them as a thick shake or add less milk and some Cadbury Philly or angel delight mix to make choc protein 'pudding'

I don't have them every day, just to make up my protein when I've not had enough from my meals, or of I fancy a chocolately treat without loads of sugar :-)

    No worries :-)
Also if you google 'myprotein discount code' there are 5% off codes around, and every day they have a different product on offer so it's worth keeping an eye on for your favourite one to pop up x

The mini shaker is good but a blender works better if you want to add ice/cream cheese/peanut butter etc, and the bags it comes in are useless so it's worth buying a storage tub too!

To save a bit of money, keep your protein levels high from other sources as well, which can also count as meals. e.g. tuna (not *cheap*, but not too bad). I am also a student and I buy them off Amazon because they usually have discounts. I try to use my protein sparingly and get it in 1 kg tubs rather than 500 g tubs. I do strength-based training in the evenings usually, and then have a protein shake before bed, to keep up the amino acid levels in the bloodstream through the night. Sleep is when muscles are repaired the most, so make sure you eat protein before then. The nitrogen required to make amino acids can't be stored in the body, so you have to keep up the building blocks for muscle through the diet.

In short: if you aren't wasteful with your protein shakes, the tubs of protein can actually last a fair amount of time. Just make sure you only have it when it's required for muscle building.

I've started taking the PhD Diet Whey high protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, but can't say too much about them as I only started on Monday, sorry :(

I will say they taste pretty good (strawberry, even though I don't generally like strawberry flavoured products - they are at least better than fake chocolate ;-) - that's just WRONG!!) and picked them up at the local Tesco for £23, although having looked on the t'interwebz they do seem to be available elsewhere for around £16-£17

Even my bf has started them (it was him who found them and suggested them) and he's really fussy once he starts on a diet - he seems to turn into a medical, health and fitness expert, or so he reckons

Sorry, hadn't seen your post - sat too long with my response open! I'm sure it's good to have contrasting opinions tho eh?!? :blushing: I love the sound of the chocolate orange one and the vanilla actually, but Tesco only had choc and strawberry

I take Maxitone Definity shakes after my workouts, I have the chocolate flavour and they are yummy (I actually look forward to drinking my shake, it's like milkshake!). They seem expensive at first but I buy from the Maxitone website and they always have some sort of discount on, plus they send lots of discount vouchers and you earn 'points' when you order so can use them towards purchases (eg I just ordered a tub this morn and with all my discounts I only had to pay £5.99!) It's free delivery too.

I've not tried toffee, raspberry was ok but seemed quite 'artificially sweet' tasting compared to the others, I guess strawberry would be the same. They are ok for a change but I couldn't face having them every day.
Now on the other hand the chocolate ones, I have to stop myself making another one hahaha

They work out really cheap as a protein source, based on the 2.5kg pack it's about 35p per shake for 20g protein, a little more if you make with milk or add other stuff in there too.
