*RANT ALERT* Entering food onto the database...

So lately a few times I have gone to log foods and its not until i've gone into the nutrional listing ive realised that the only value listed is the calories one...
What is the point in that? surely you are only kidding yourself on the other values i.e Carbs,Protein etc...we are all here to help and support each other right? not make it difficult for the next person wanting to log the same thing...grrrr!!
Sorry for the rant but it really is a bug bear of mine!!

I agree! It's one of my pet peeves! If you're going to add something to the database, put everything in! Also, if you're going to make up an "in you're dreams" calorie number for something, don't add it to the database!0
-
Agreed. I have added a few "duplicates" to the database becasue of calorie only listings.
Food in the UK doesnt have to list cholesterol, vitamin content or dietry fibre for example but I fill in all the sections I have info about which is always cals, protein, fat, carbs, sugar, sodium0 -
Yes it's annoying, but duplicates are equally annoying. It's easy to edit the wrong/incomplete entries (with the green edit button).0

Maybe you should ask for your money back,, Oh thats right ITS FREE. I thank god for this APP and can deal with minor inconviences.0

im always editing things from the info im putting in from labels. drives me mad!0
-
I edit everything, the worst one is sodium added as grams instead of mg. And yes it is a free app but wha'ts the point of the people who LIE about what's going into their bodies using it, not very helpful for the people who use it properly0

ive had this too....sooo annoying ! was inputting frozen veg stirfry the other day (its v low in calories) but for some reason the person who had entered it to the database had lowered the calories even further....same brand,no generic's !!.i mean why? they are only kidding themselves! by thier input a 160g portion(i think thats the weight) was 35 calories when in truth it was 82cals not a major thing i know but it did bug me, it does make me wonder how many other bits out there are wrong and i now check everything.0
-
When I have the labels I fix the ones I find, but it's things like trying to account for food from a café that you're already worried about inaccuracy!0
-
Some of the nutritional info may be incorrect now due to variations in different countries where the same product is sold and/or variations in the product over time... I always try and check though.0

Totally agree, why would you enter one entry, when it is easier to log every nutrient, who just tracks cals. WOW under my cal goal but I died of a heart attack because I never looked at Fat or Sodium, GREAT JOB

I can't see how to edit? If I search for a food, view the nutritional info and see it is incorrect, I can't click on the "no" button to edit it because my browser won't let me. Is there another way to edit that I'm missing?0 -

I agree. It's free. There is a lot of databases that you gasp pay for that are equally deficent.0 -
Glad you said this, OP - I've noticed my sodium intake is next to nothing, super super low, and I just cannot believe it truly IS that low.0

If someone is only just starting out on MFP and watching what they eat, then they might only be paying attention to calories -- it's a step in the right direction, don't knock them for that. I didn't care in the slightest about sugar (I still don't, really), sodium and fat when I started this, aside from making the (to me) obvious changes of stopping adding salt to food and stopping frying anything.0 -
I just correct incomplete and wrong entries, sure it would if the database was complete and correct, but common, we are the one building it, and we do it for free.0
-
who just tracks cals.
I just track cals. Couldn't care less about the macros because I'm comfortable that my diet is sufficiently healthy and I have no issues with carbs v. protein etc. I know I was putting on weight because I was beginning to eat larger portions, not because I was eating the wrong things, so they're of little significance to me.
Saying that, if I inadvertently log something that's cals only, I'll go back & remove it because it bugs me to see loads of 0s when I know they're not right.
I do think people are being too judgemental though. I know it's frustrating, but not everyone adding stuff knows what they're doing. And then others assume the DB is accurate and accept the values without question. Perhaps some more info from MFP on what you're entering, why, where it goes etc. would help. Or perhaps some pointers from those in the know to sites that contain accurate values would help. If you're cooking something from scratch, non pre-packed ingredients, it can be hard to understand what the values ought to be. Working out cals may be as much as is possible for some, without knowing where else to get the info.
And contradicting myself again - I've only added things to the DB when I've named them in a way that means others can look them up to check.0 -

I do find it annoying as sometimes I feel like the person who added it only put on information for the areas they are bothered about watching themselves.
Having said that I usually have the nutritional values with me of the item I'm putting in my food diary as there can be differences between countries so I always want to make sure I have the right values so I just edit it if it's missing the other nutritional values. Although it does get confusing when an item over here has different values to the same in a different country, that's where duplicates come in handy, if two entries are the same but neither are the values I have for the same product I will alter one and put (UK) in the title.
So yes annoying but at least it's something we can fix straight away rather than having to email tech support and wait.0 -
i wish more foods in the uk would put the vitamin and mineral content of foods particularly calcium and iron0

^ Very true! It's a quick fix, plus, I have better things to be worrying about than if someone put the complete information in or not. I put it in, and move on.0 -
I've used the barcode scanner on the mobile app a few times and it is GREAT!! Then, I used the tools on the website to have the nutritional information that I want to track show up (calories, fat, sodium, protein, cholesterol).
I used to use MFP but I switched to Livestrong.com a while back but was never totally happy with it. Then, on a whim I just switched back to MFP this week and I couldn't be happier. Remember, nothing is perfect but having the ability to track info quickly is great. Glad I switched back.0 -

Aha, so it's go into Food --> Database and then search, once I've found something is wrong by searching in my food diary to add to a meal. OK, thanks!0
