I just switched out my desk chair for an exercise ball at work and am trying to find how many calories it uses but have had no luck. Anyone know? I have been registered on here for a while just haven't been actively on it. Any new friends/encouragement is welcome!

    see if this helps....

    http://www.livestrong.com/article/310665-calories-burned-sitting-on-an-exercise-ball/

basically, since you're not logging what you're already burning by just sitting everyday, I would think of it as 6 cals per hour that your on the ball if you're 135lbs, 12 if you're 270lbs & so on. you can adjust for the inbetween weight differences with some basic math. I've gotta go to WalMart for lunch anyway so I'm thinkign today is a good day for me to ask Ruth if I can have one up here at work....

That is fascinating! I've been sitting on an exercise ball at work for months now and not bothering to log it as anything since I couldn't figure out what I was burning (if anything). I will probably still not log it (because it feels like cheating somehow since I'm just sitting and I've grown used to using my core this way), but it's still interesting to know. Thanks for posting that link!

Just over 6 calories an hour for me ..... not bad. I'm sure HR would have a fit if I brought my ball to work though.

i think you might need to wear an hrm on this... it would be difficult to mind something completely accurate... are you just sitting, are you bouncing, are you doing abs while sitting <-- those factors will make a huge difference in the burn

Just sitting on the ball improves stability and balance, but if you want to incorporate it into your exercise routine then you'll burn some calories..
Here's some info to help you out..

looks like I've been vetoed :frown:
  • I read that and it was all gibberish the way the livestrong came across to me but you know how i compute things! I will work with that since its not far off of my weight and i have been using it 8hrs yesterday and today. Yay! Now what about those arm curls that I use the 2lb weights for though? I cant seem to find anything that shows the cal burned?
  • I agree on the difficult to be accurate. At this point I am ok with not getting as many calories burned logged then too much. I do bounce (its fun haha) and i have 2lb and 3lb weights next to me when I am on the phone or having to research something for work so i figure i am burning the 12 sometimes more within the hour. A safe guestimate even if it is a little on the low side. I figure baby steps to get into a routine is probably best for me. Thanks for the comment, it did make me think about it!
