I set up my profile and am told that I need to consume 1200 calories however I am still currently breastfeeding my 5 1/2 month old son. Many things that I have read say that I need to eat no less than 1800 calories per day in order for my son to get the nutrients he needs. Has anyone heard anything different? Does anyone have any advice for me?

Thanks so much!

I am a big advocate of the primal approach, perhaps it would work for you? It's all about removing toxins from food and getting the most nutrition you can out of what you eat. I think it would be worth at least looking into, especially if you are breast feeding.

  • I'm not a doctor, only a nurse...but I do know that you're body requires at least an additional 500 calories a day while you are still breastfeeding, for the nutrition and nutrients needed for not only you, but your baby. So definitely, a no-go on the 1200 calorie diet, not safe. Your body is still refueling for yourself and your little one, and needs that extra nutrition at this point. I know weight loss is probably on the mind after having a baby, but cutting calories while breastfeeding isnt good for you, or your sweet one! I hope this helps a little!
  • I've been on 1200 calories (plus eating back whatever I burn through exercise) for about 10 days now. I'm nursing my 3 year old & have definitely noticed my supply is dwindling down. My girl is old enough that I feel just fine letting it die down completely, but your guy still needs quite a bit from you. I haven't been doing this long, but I can say in my experience 1200 calories is not enough to keep the milk factory going.
  • Nurse here. You definitely need the extra calories! Remember, you burn calories breastfeeding too!
