Living with family and their unhealthy lifestyle

Please help! I am an adult, who due to divorce, relocation and overall lack of funds, has to live with my mother and brother who I love very much and we all get along except for in the kitchen! I recently received concerning news about my health and decided to make a serious commitment to life. However my mother and brother, who both have issues with high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. do not care for my suggestions for healthier eating. We all take turns cooking and planning meals, but when I am not cooking, I have no say and find myself presented with a 600 calorie (for 1 cup) entree that I have to workout and extra 20 mins (which I don't really mind doing on a good day). Please know, I am not in perfect shape at all, but I have renewed my desire to be an active, healthy adult. But this living situation is a threat. knowing that she needs to lose weight, Mom goes to Walmart and buys two packages of cookies! Even today, I went walking with my mother and logged in almost 2 miles and it was filled with complaints and at one point anger. I love my family and I want them to be healthier especially my mother, but I don't want to nag and don't want me progress halted either. please advise

That is a tough one. Does your family like the meals you plan and cook? Maybe you can suggest that you plan and cook the meals. Or maybe they can plan meals once or twice a week. In exchange your mom and brother can do clean-up. If they don't want to do that, then I guess you will have to plan and cook your own meals if they are making something unhealthy.

    Good luck to you!

The choice to live a healthy life is not an easy choice. It takes a lot of courage, perseverance and ambition. With that said, it does not seem as if your mother and brother have decided to embark on that journey with you. I understand your frustration and the fear you may have for their health. Keep pressing forward with your goal. Remind your self that YOU are setting the EXAMPLE. Whenever they are ready to commit to a healthy lifestyle, they know they can turn to you for advice and encouragement.

In my family, there's a false perception that healthy means less tasty or painful. Slowly I started introducing meals to them that they enjoy. Exercise is a different challenge, however.Show them that exercise does not need to be confined to weights and the gym. Suggest going to the park to play frisbee, spending the day at the pool, or spend a day at the beach if you're near one.

    Keep up the good work!
