NSV: Taking Flight!

I am a larger gal- there are pictures in my profile. Living on the opposite coast as my family causes me great anxiety. Anxiety that is heightened every time I fly home to visit. Let's be honest here: I'm the big girl at the gate in the terminal that everyone is looking at hoping they don't get stuck sitting next to. I am nowhere near needing to buy myself an extra ticket, but it's a snug little fit on a Southwest 737. I in fact always get early bird check in so that I can pick a seat in an open row, and people then can make the choice to sit next to me, not be subjected to me sitting next to them.
My husband and I flew home in October and I was so glad it was him stuck next to me. I could just barely get the seat belt buckled. When they pass out in flight snacks I would hate having to put my tray down because it never came fully down- my thighs and stomach were just too big. It would come almost all the way- but just couldn't make it.
I have been feeling defeated lately about my diet and exercise routine and add to that the anxiety of having to squeeze into another seat on four flights round trip to get home last weekend and I was just not a happy camper. That all changed on my flight back to California yesterday!
Our flight was only about half booked and I sat in an aisle seat for the first time ever. I didn't notice it on the way to VA, but when I sat down I was able to buckle the seat belt... AND, I was able to tighten it a little bit! Folks: that is not all! When drinks were passed out I lowered my tray, and it lowered COMPLETELY! There was a solid inch between the bottom of the tray and the top of my thighs!
I did a happy dance right there in my seat and I'm pretty sure the older gentleman in the window seat of my row thought I was CRAZY!
It was the best feeling in the world knowing that my hard work is paying off and I was able to do something I had never been able to do, on planes I had ridden in several times over the course of the last few years! There was no greater feeling, and it motivated me to get up this morning (after landing at 11:30pm, getting home around 1am!) and head to both spin and Pilates! All my very hard work is paying off- even if that scale hasn't budged!

What a wonderful NSV.
I'm traveling in 2 weeks to see my daughter and her family who live 2 states away.
I always have to get 2 planes to get there. I totally understand what you are saying and it was like hearing my own story.
When my hubby goes with me it isn't as bad because I know I can move slightly more his side to give the person on the other side more room. When I travel on my own it's a whole different story. I stress for days before going. I try to get an aisle seat so at least I only have one person on one side to worry about. I have always, bar one time on a very old plane, been able to do up the belt but never with much room to spare. You're so right about the tray. I always look at others and their tray sits down really neatly, mine never seems to look the same and is right into my tummy making it a bit uncomfortable.
I'm so looking forward to having a NSV next flight, it has to be better as I've lost 32 lbs since my last flight.
I'm going on my own and am not nervous like usual.
I have a 43cm wide chair at home which is 1 cm wider than most air line seats and I know it's a lot more comfortable than it used to be. I do still spill over a bit but in time that will go.
I'm very excited for you as I know exactly what you're saying.
Keep an eye out for my NSV on airplanes coming in a few weeks.0 -

I fly a lot for business and I do understand! It's so darn uncomfortable! Congrats, and those seat belts will keep getting looser!0
