Edema

Hi everyone!
Today my physical therapist suggested that I take a water pill/diuretic for the swelling in my lower leg. I have a lot of soft tissue damage due to breaking my leg.
The bone is healing fine, btw.
Any suggestions for a NATURAL REMEDY?

Elevate your leg.
Wear a compression stocking.0 -
Compression Socks
and check out Horse Chestnut. It's homeopathic support for circulation in the legs. I don't know a lot about it, but I've just started it and it seems to be working (I've had tissue and vascular problems in my legs since high school)0 -

Obviously I don't know your exact situation but diuretics are usually used for oedema (sorry that's how it's spelt in UK lol!) caused by heart or kidney failure as those organs aren't working properly and fluid builds up. If you don't have these problems then the swelling is likely from a different physiological process and I'm not sure of the logic behind using diuretics. Plus they do have side effects.
What about elevating your leg when sitting down, massage and physio (though I guess your already doing that bit!)
To be honest probably best to ask your doctor before taking or not taking any kind of medication.0 -
Thanks for the suggestions
I do elevate my leg (above the heart), and ice regularly. I get deep tissue massages at therapy and intense ice treatments.
He wants me to try water pills b/c despite all we've tried the swelling is worse.
I cut back on walking, reduced my sodium (including cokes), stopped heat treatments for the nerve damage, I drink at least 8c of water everyday.
dont know what else to do!
I'll check into compression socks/stocking, and horse chestnut supplements.
Off to visit Karens blog...
Any other suggestions?0 -
I went to my doctor today and he prescribed a diuretic for water retention. I should take it everyday until normal.
Apparently.
Thanks to all for your suggestions!0 -
Keeping your legs up as much as possible and cardio exercise. The cardio will get your heart rate up which will move the fluid more quickly. After you exercise you will have greater edema but in the following hour you will see it decrease substantially.0

I also occasionally have edema from my kidneys acting up....I take AC Carbamide from Standard Process.....it's a supplement as opposed to a medication, but you still need a dr to give it to you. I get mine from a chiropractor who does muscle testing.1

I have Idiopathic Angioedema - swelling for no specific reason...
BUT - NSAID's are known to have a side effect of inflammation. My specialist told me to stay away from all of them and my swelling episodes have decreased. I suffered from Migrains for a long time and did not realize that my migrain pill (Excedrin for Migrains) increases inflammation which is what edema is.
That said I am also highly sensitive to white flour products and salt.0 -
