Sounds Totally Backwards

Losing weight since I've started MFP has not been an issue. In fact, I'm very excited about the progress I've made. Modifying my diet has been great for me and my family!

After some extensive testing over the course of 3 years, I finally have an accurate medical diagnosis for some issues that I've had. My cardiologist has put a (hopefully temporary) ban on exercise and I am now supposed to follow a high sodium diet. I know that sounds backwards, but it makes total sense given my condition. My heart is completely healthy so I'm hopeful that he'll allow me to start exercising again soon.

Here's the question...

Does anyone have any low calorie, moderately high sodium suggestions? I don't want to go overboard with my sodium, but it definitely needs to be present in my diet.

Thanks!!

Salt. Just add an extra pinch of salt to your food. A teaspoon of kosher salt has about 2000 mg of sodium, so just pick a couple things you eat during the day, and add a pinch of salt.

Sounds like you have postural hypotension?

My wife was told, just cook stuff in a little salt. She also loves popcorn with a little bit of salt.
  • I have neurogenic syncope. It has similar symptoms, but different causes. I'm not a fan of a high sodium diet but I'll do what I have to do in order to keep from passing out.

I already add salt to almost everything and still have a decently low sodium intake. I suppose I'll just try adding more. I'm hesitant to cook everything with salt because of my husband and daughter. Thanks for your ideas!

One thing I have noticed in my diet that is pretty heavy in sodium are my southwest omelets I make. It's 2 eggs, 3 egg whites, 1/4 cup shredded cheese and 2 tbsp of salsa. I found that cheese and salsa add a lot of sodium. If you like either, you can look into using that.
  • I am DEFINITELY a fan of cheese and salsa. I'll consider that an automatic add. :o) And it will definitely add taste to my usual morning egg. Thanks!

Salted fish, however, finding it prepared is difficult these days except in boutique groceries. There are a number of places online you can find how to make it at home..... That assumes you like fish.
  • smoked salmon. you can usually find it at any grocery store in the fish section. I get mine from Fred Meyer and sometimes from my local organic market.

Chinese food. We went to PF Changs one night and my sodium hit 10,000 mg!

  • Thanks, guys! All great suggestions. I need to start cooking more fish anyway. This will be good incentive to learn.
