Building strength??

I've been riding my bike pretty regularily for over a year now....I have three pretty standard routes, one is about 3 miles, one is around 8 miles and one is around 12 miles. I didn't have much time yesterday so I did my short 3 mile ride, and I was practically gasping for air and my legs felt like rubber.
I know sometimes we're just fatigued and sometimes stuff like wind plays a factor, but this isn't a super rare thing, and it seems like after doing it for this long, I'd have built up some sort of tolerance or strength level so that I don't feel this tired from even a short, mostly flat ride.
Esspecially considering I am hauling around 40 less pounds than I was a year ago....what gives?

:frown: I don't understand it either. If I miss one day of working out, my legs feel like rubber. They ache and I feel almost like I am starting all over again. If I don't do some type of circuit training every day, I think I am losing the battle! I hope you find an answer because I also would like to know. Good luck.0
