Help! Weight Loss Stall - Can't make it past 30 lbs

I'm so frustrated right now. I have changed my lifestyle so much (only drink water, WAY more vegetables, work out several times a week, and eating only lean protein), but I can't seem to get past losing 30 lbs. I admit, I'm not 100% perfect, and I do have my slip ups, but I work hard to make them few and far between.

I don't have a workout buddy and most of my friends are incredibly fit already, so I'm intimidated to workout with them. I feel like I need some extra motivation. When I do work out, I usually stick to 45 minutes of cardio and I burn a lot of calories, but I am not that sore anymore. I'm just getting so frustrated.

I want to lose it all and be healthy, but I have another 80 lbs to lose and it's taking forever. Any suggestions, pointers, help would be greatly appreciated. I need some new ideas that will get me newly motivated.

Thanks!

One thing that will help is you need to start lifting. Build up that muscle and it will burn more fat. And make sure you are eating enough calories too! If you haven't adjusted your intake since before the first 30lbs loss, it may be time to bump them up. I bumped mine from 1200cals after about a 30lbs loss and when I started running more. Then I went up again at about 50. I'm at 1470 right now, but I try to take a day or two during the week (on rest days usually) to stay around 1200. And then on the weekends I'll usually have a day where I go over 1470. It keeps your body guessing so it won't settle in and get comfy! lol I broke my 4 month plateau doing that. Good Luck!!!! 30lbs so far is terrific!!!!

I agree with the above on lifting weights and upping your calories... Also maybe you should try working out with your friends if they go to the same gym as you.. You might learn some new exercises to try and to add into your own routine to switch things up... Keep up the great work!!!

I will be glad to look at your Food Diary, and review it to see if there is anything that may be causing your weight to plateau.

Feel free to send me a friend request in MFP

It took a long time to put the weight on and it will take a long time to take it off. Just keep pressing thru and allowing your body to adapt. I would increase CARDIO and make sure you are switching up your excercises.

Thanks. I'll definitely try this out. At the beginning I was counting my calories religiously. But more recently I haven't been doing that because I felt that I had a good idea of how many calories everything I ate was. I think I'm going to go back to counting more closely. I will definitely put in strength training at my gym visits.

Is it better to do weight machines before or after cardio?

3 days a week add an extra 30 minutes of cardio. That will help. Make sure you are changing up your workout routine. That's the best way to see results, don't get stuck on just one routine.
  • bump is what people put when they want to come back to the thread later, usually because they have the same question or just want to follow the conversation...not to long ago i had no idea what it was either ;)

Hi, weight has peeled off me in the past when I'm sugar and flour free cuz flour turns to sugar which turns to FAT. I'm also "depression free" when I'm eating really well. I'm trying to start a group. I've only been using the site a few days now so don't quite know what I'm doing but I'll get the hang of it! ;) I'll send you an invite. Good luck, maybe we'll talk again.

Maybe salt intake might be one factor. I find I can fluxuate 5 or 6 pounds if I eat too much salt and I need to watch the cottage cheese because it is loaded.

Since I started bootcamp I hadn't been running as often. So my trainer suggested that I start running for about 20mins or so before class, and sometimes I run a little longer after just to get a little more in. And I do about 10 mins of running before I lift to get warmed up and blood flowing, then after I'm done I'll run between 10-20 mins depending on how I'm feeling. If you do a bunch of cardio before you lift, you run the risk of getting warn out sooner.

Also, if you have the option, while your lifting add a bit of cardio stuff in between sets. Instead of doing a set and sitting there waiting to do your next set, do some jump rope, or walking lunges, or squats, just something to keep your heart rate up. It helps burn cals and make your workout more efficient. IF you feel comfortable doing that. I don't myself, because I'm uncomfortable with doing all that in the weight area of my gym. But I should. lol

Haha great idea. I'm a bit uncomfortable doing that in the weight area too, but maybe I can do a modified version at home with body weight exercises/ cardio. :-)

I'm not a good runner. It's hard on my knees, since I'm fairly overweight. But it is my dream one day to be a runner. I'm working towards it!

    Thanks!

I don't think I would add MORE cardio. Just maybe change up what and how you do it. Do you do interval training during your cardio?

Also the advice to start doing weights is good. I started this week and the scale is responding :)

Just change it up. Our bodies have an amazing ability to adapt to our circumstances and then do what is needed to make it "less work" and store more calories! It's what its built to do!

Oh yeah, of course do whatever cardio you are comfortable with. I just like to run. I was never a runner either. HATED IT! But somewhere around 28 one day I decided, I think I want to be a runner! lol And for several years I would run a mile here and there, and I started doing 5ks, a couple a year. Then I started running 3miles a couple times a week about 2 years ago. Then last year I decided to do a half marathon! So I started running longer runs, and now I'm doing races every month from 5ks to a couple halfs, to the Warrior dash. You really just have to build up to it! You can totally do it though! If you want to become a runner, you will! And if feels amazing too. I'm not a fast runner at all, but it just feels good, and the more you do it the better you get at it! 2 months ago I was warming up on the treadmill at 3.5 and trying to work up to a steady 5.0. Now I warm up at 5.5 and run 20mins at 6.0 and do intervals of faster. Your body really does adapt quickly! Just keep at it! You are doing great so far!!

And yes, I have thought about doing that kind of training in the comfort of home so I don't get stared at for doing jumping jacks among the weight benches! lol
