Hello MFP,
I am attempting to try no/low carbs for 1 week. My goal is to not consume more than 60g of carbs. Can you provide me with suggestions of food that have no carbs or are low in carb?

Thanks,
Stacy

    From about.com
  • Eggs!
    & meat
    & cheese

I did the no/low carb thing for about 2 weeks, & I was PSYCHO by the end.... sooo moody D:

I've since switched to no bad carbs (refined sugars & flours, etc), which means I can still eat fruits & veggies. Unless you absolutely have to do no/low carb, I suggest still allowing yourself good carbs
  • My goal was to eat fruits and veggies, I need guidance don't really know how to work it. =)

Some people have major mood swings when they go too low on carbs, or they just feel like total crap. I'm not one of those people, but I highly suggest making sure you keep veggies in your diet to keep things moving.. if you know what I mean. Meat and cheese can make you crap a brick.

Look up lower carb fruits as well. Apples are around 20g with 3-4g of fiber.
    Spinach is fantastic.

Eggs are excellent too, any time of the day.

You can also make a no carb bread! Look up the Cloud Bread recipe in the forums, it's easy to make and pretty delicious...

    It's 3 eggs, separated
3 tbsp whole milk cottage cheese or 3 tbsp cream cheese
    1/4 tsp cream of tartar
1 packet of artificial sweetener (I used Stevia)

    1. Preheat the oven to 300
    2. Separate the eggs carefully, there can be no yolk in the whites.
    3. In one bowl, mix together the egg yolks, the 3TBSP of cottage or cream cheese and the one packet of sweetener until smooth.
    4. In the other bowl add the 1/4 tsp of cream of tartar to the whites and beat the whites on high speed until they are fluffy and form nice peaks.
    5. Very carefully fold the egg yolk mixture into the egg whites until mixed, but try and not break down the fluffiness of the egg whites too much.
    6. Spray two cookie sheets with Pam or other fat-free cooking spray (I used Pam with Olive Oil)
    7. Scoop the mixture into 10 even rounds on the sheets (about the size of a McDonald's hamburger bun), roughly 3/4 inch thick and 4-5 inches across
    8. Bake on the middle rack. Keep an eye on them, they take anywhere from 20-30 minutes. You want them to be golden brown like a hamburger bun.
    9. You can eat them right away for a more flakey taste, or seal them in a ziploc overnight to get a firmer, chewier texture.

Merely out of curiosity, why would you want to cut your carbs? What's the process?
  • You can go to Atkins.com and look on there to get ideas of how to eat low carb and still be healthy. South Beach diet is also a good option, but you have to pay for thier website. You should try to cut all your carbs, you need some. Atkins recommends 20-24 net carbs for the first 2 weeks of the diet. Which is low, but you still have to eat veggies, meats, cheeses, dairy ect. Check it out and see if it helps.
  • I am definately not cutting ALL of my carbs, goal is to consume less than 60g a day to see if it help any with the weight loss cause I am a big carb consumer...!! GOAL IS TO CUT BACK NOT CUT OUT!

Good luck. I tried this because I suffer from PCOS and life was not worth living. Let us know how you feel.

I aim for about 60-75g carbs daily and usually get them from vegetables (limiting fruits because of sugar). Once you get off the refined carbs, it's not so difficult. I don't crave them and I don't crave sweets as much either.

I loosely follow South Beach and do about 99 percent of my own cooking to screen out so-called bad carbs.

For the two-week "induction" period, where you eat no grains or fruit at all, I ate a lot of vegetables--including vegetable soup (with chicken) for breakfast almost every day. A lot of lower-fat cheeses, tons of nuts (cashews, almonds and walnuts) and nut butters on celery for snacks. Just lots of lean protein and vegetables.

I've slowly been incorporating more healthy carbs back into my life--if I eat fruit, it's typically berries or an orange, since apples have a lot more carbs (but are still healthy, if I eat one I try to also include a protein, like some cheese or nut butter). But I do not lean on fruit like I used to. I also have returned to eating some pasta, but always with protein, and bread, occasionally, but always with protein. But I do watch that carb number like a hawk on my food diary, which is open if you want to take a look.

Why for only 1 week? You are going to lose a bunch of water and very little fat, at least no more fat than you would lose doing standard calorie restriction.

I've been 70 or less for a year and it hasn't caused me any problems. Cut out anything processed, get your carbs from veggies and fruits (non-starchy etc) and make sure you getting good sources of fats and protein. Do a lot of research.

Try it for a month and if it sucks then move onto something else. Everyone is different
