Constant calorie counting.. Making me nutty.. Will I be coun

Okay, so first off I LOVE MFP and everyone that is extremely supportive. Without this site I wouldn't be close to 25lbs down and aware of my food quality and portions. BUT at the same time, sometimes I get tired of doing all of this, worrying about how many calories is in that or how many cups, ounces, tablespoons are in this... I will never stop because now that I've started I can see that it works and that is amazing! Nothing else has worked for me before, so it is a great feeling... I think because I have an ALL or NOTHING personality it can make me a little nutty, trying to count every last drop of anything and everything I have or am about to consume.. I'm pretty obsessive over everything. I guess that is a good thing since I am trying to lose weight, but sometimes it drives me crazy!!! Am I the only one out there feeling like this??? Much love

It does get tiring, and it is time consuming but it gets a lot easier with time too. I know people say you should always mix up your foods, but at the same time, I like consistency. So for me, logging is really easy when I know that every day I'm going to have one orange, one banana, and 12 baby carrots. And the longer you're on here, the more foods it remembers, and I find that I can usually just go back a month and copy a dinner to today. You still have to make minor adjustments if you changed it up, or used different quantities but it all makes it a lot quicker in the long run. My boyfriend hates all the weighing and measuring before dinner but honestly, I don't mind it much at all, because it's become routine and it's worth it.0

It makes me nutty, too.
After a few months, I started taking one day a week off from logging my food. Not necessarily to binge or cheat... just to have a day of feeling "normal." After six months, I started taking all weekends and holidays off from logging my food. That's worked well for me. There's been times that I took full weeks off, and I took most of January off when I was recovering from an injury.0 -
i feel the same. and some days it doesnt bother me, others i really just wanna let all my MFP friends know im taking a week off! what keeps me coming back are the friends! some people have been there since the beginning and i would feel sad in knowing to never have "contact" again.
mabe we could still use the site but just take a break here and there from logging. just come on and be an encouragement and then get off im hoping with time i will just know what a right portion is and dont need to think about it. i wont over-eat becasue i wont want or need to. this is my goal.0 -
No way, not just you. My advice if you feel like it's getting to become obsessive, start giving yourself days off from logging. Like 1 a week should do it. Sometimes it's necessary to help you keep your sanity.0

I find it just gets a habit over time
I can see how it comes across as obsessive to others. My old housemate "you are measuring your wine?!"
Yes, yes I am. SHUT UP!0 -
I was obsessed when I started and I think it is normal, you are actually thinking about what you are eating rather than just putting anything and everything in your mouth.
I would say that you will eventually know roughly what the nutritional value is of the foods that you eat. Having been forced to think and calculate your food intake you will be able to make better choices or at least more informed ones.
If you aren't blessed with a super fast metabolism and very very active lifestyle then you are going to have to think about what you eat in order to get the healthy body you want. Unfortunately we live in a society where we are pushed all kinds of unhealthy treats and foods rather than the message that healthy eating and exercise are the best way to live.
It does get easier and you will start to make this way of eating and living your 'norm'0 -
yes it does. The thing is this ... it is the only thing that works for me.calorie counting. I once lost 100 pounds this way. Then I did get tired of it... started to relax a little.
I said thats ok to eat more calories (though I wasn't writing them down) because I exercise. Then I had to take two jobs (desk jobs) Was going through school and effectively cut out my exercise. Now I am back up higher then before because I let myself slip. The thing is to me you just need to keep track.
Now I have taken a day off, but had a mental note of what I ate and did, and wrote it down the next day. Its important so you can see your progress too.
I say log all your days ... but don't wait any longer then 1-2 days. That is just my opinion0 -
After you do it for a while, many people are able to stop. The counting is simply a way to learn portion control. Once you learn portion control, you don't always have to count. Besides, most of us don't eat more than 20 different meals. Pretty soon, you'll know what's in your meals, more or less.0

:noway: Must put the letters back in the right order......must.......0 -
Everything that's food has become a number to me and i'm constantly considering should I eat this now or have that later. It does get easier as you go because the things that you eat all the time, you wont have to look them up after a while. Honestly, I don't use the food tracker on MFP. I don't feel like taking the time to surf through the webpages punching in every single ingredient in a recipe (say fijitas). What I do is calculate them (usually using the nutrition facts on the packages) then put the total in a note pad I have on the home screen of my phone. So instead of having to punch in peppers, onions, tortillas, salsa and mushrooms all separate, I just write 1 fajita 150 calories. Its what works for me so you just need to find your stride and what works for you.0

YES. It gets so tiring and is a constant worry.0

I know it's a pain! But you'll start to get used to it, start knowing what 75g of pasta looks like without having to measure it, all of that. See this part as learning. I read somewhere on here a few nights ago a girl had estimated 180 cals for a cookie (which is entirely possible, a brand I like has exactly 180 cookies), but she checked and HER cookie was 300! So now she knows, and you'll start knowing this stuff as well. Keep going, and one day you won't need to - you'll just *know*0

The thing that drives me the nuttiest is not having access to nutritional values of food at restaurants, especially local ones. I always do a search on something I think is similiar and sometimes quick add extra calories.0

I need the letters in the right order too With that said out loud... I depend on the site to double check me for information and accuracy regarding my food intake so I don't tire counting at all. I do have a better idea of foods that work well for me and so can log them after eating or earlier in the day and execute which I could never do before. So I don't tire but make a game of what I know and what I still must learn. All in all I'm grateful for the site and the fact that I use it which I've never, ever logged before even though I knew I should be doing so.0

It's become a habit for me. It really bothers me when I'm eating something that someone else made so I have NO idea how many calories are in it... drives me crazy. On those days sometimes I just stop logging and forget about it or sometimes I just do a search for whatever type of food it was and just pick a random "homemade" one in the database. But other than that, I like counting. I feel more economical this way, I'm only eating as much as my body needs lol :-p0

I took a week off this week, but came on to support and post daily. Its not been the healthiest of weeks and shows me I still NEED to log, whether I want to every day or not lol x0

I keep measuring cups out on the counter so that when I am serving food, I can quickly scoop the correct portion onto my plate. I try to notice what "5 oz. wine" looks like in the glass, so eventually, I will be able to pour without measuring. I also have an electronic scale on my counter, so I can measure food in ounces or grams, so I know what I am eating. I also have a calorie book handy, so I can look things up, this helps me plan what to cook. Sometimes, I abandon a choice because it is too calorie filled. My goal is to learn how to eyeball correct portions, and remember the calorie count of foods I eat most often, so that eventually, I can to portion control with little conscious effort. I will be very vigilant now, so I can relax later. I will need to control portions for the rest of my life no doubt. I intend to change my ways so I can maintain a good weight after I have lost my present extra pounds.:bigsmile:0

Whenever I am eating something I did not prepare, I take a conservative portion. I think you can't go too wrong if you do that. And fill up on salad with no dressing, clear broth, water, raw veggies, or whatever.0

I think I would feel more crazy if I was still gaining the weight and aimlessly eating and not exercising and getting absolutely nowhere and feeling miserable. Your weight loss is amazing. People like you inspire me to keep doin it!0

I'm the same way! My mom wanted to make me eggs a few weeks ago and I was like sure, if you measure how much milk and chesse! LOL It's horrible sometimes... I go to a little Mexican place and eat Fajitas every once in a while and I love to eat it, but then there is the after math of trying to figure out everything you just ate!!!!0 -

Only prob i would run into with this is that this doesnt take care of counting fat, sodium, etc.0 -
Try thinking of it as just a log of what you are eating. When I started it wasn't really to count calories. I wanted to simply be more aware of what I was putting in my mouth. If I went out and had a burger I was amazed at how many calories it burned up and I used it (and still do) as more of an education tool than anything else. I wanted to be more aware and the fact that it counts the calories for you as well is just a bonus. If you think of it that way you maybe won't worry so much about it and just enjoy your food. Eventually you'll know the food you LOVE that have the least "cost" to you. You will find some favourite recipes and be on track without even having to think about it.
Cheers!0 -
After counting calories and measuring for awhile, I've gotten pretty good at eyeballing proportions/sizes. If I stop counting calories at some point in the future, I'll still have this skill, and I'll still be able to make more informed/educated choices in the future.0

you guys sound exactly like me XD0 -
I feel the same way! I end up on the website a good portion of my day calculating calories for that day or the next (or sometimes the next WEEK). I have a very addictive personality though...So it could just be that taking over. However, anytime I actually think about when I'll leave the site for good I get SUPER anxious & can't imagine not tracking my calories...Damn you MFP, feeding into my OCD & food habit addiction! {i really do love the site though! ]0

I've made it part of my everyday routine, doesn't bother me one bit, I kind of look forward to seeing what I'm eating and how many calories I'm consuming in the day......0
