Question about fitness models....

Is it just me, or do all fitness models have the same body shape: ruler or banana. Occasionally an apple. There are a zillion threads about "girls with muscle vs curvy girls." But maybe the real reason for all the debate is that you never seem to see any pears or hourglasses as fitness models.

It seems like I rarely see photos of leaner more muscular versions of my body shape. Most are straight in the waist and hips (and pose to create a curvier look by bending at the waist and sticking their hips out).

Does anyone notice the same thing?

Do you think that successful fitness models have straighter body shapes (and it is is a requirement)? Or that people who are straighter are more likely to want to attain that look? Or that people who are pears or hourglasses want to be a little softer?

What do you think?

I think it's an unspoken rule in their line of work. I've seen muscular curvy women in real life, but I've never seen them modeling. I think people expect well muscled people to look a certain way, and that the curvy muscular girls don't fit the mold. They're almost always thicker too, so maybe they aren't perceived as ripped/toned enough.

i dont know if mags specifically look for those shapes, it might just be a matter of that's what the majority is in the market.

i think it's mainly one of those things where ruler or banana shaped women might be more likely to be interested in sports and pursuing those things which means you're going to have more of them as fitness models.

also, i've noticed that if you have a different body type than the majority of others doing the same thing then there will always be commentary on it because it's so noticeable. for instance i was on the swim team in high school and college an most of those girls were rulers or apples. i stuck out as an hourglass especially because of the swimsuit. pretty much the same thing for when i played soccer and i was known as the girl from the SUA soccer team with the big boobs :embarassed:

considering how self conscious teen girls are about their bodies anyway, having to compound that with people actively discussing your body makes it worse. just judging by my the girl friends i've had, the majority of the ones who developed into pears and hourglasses dropped out of sports in high school (even if they were interested in it) and never returned to it.

in any case, i love love seeing different body types in sports.and i think most other women would appreciate seeing that as well.. a fit apple, a fit pear, a fir ruler.. there should be room for all of those to be models

one of my favorites is ballerina misty copeland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6kZ90_0eKc she definitely doesnt look like a typical ballerina..

I think it has to do with the way they train. A lot of weight training involves balancing weight which works the core and abdominal wall muscles and can make you appear wider in midsection changing your overall shape.

Very low body fat percentage takes away the "hippy" look that is signature of the hourglass figure as well.

She's still curvy. Yes she has fake boobs, but she still has a beautiful figure, hips, small waist. Yes, she is curvy. Quite so, especially for a fitness model.

She has well-defined hips for a fitness model. Although, truthfully I don't want to look as lean as a fitness model. But I'll take their legs. :D

I think it's part of the modeling world's narrow view of what is proper. Agents and clients are only looking for a model who fits into their mold of what's considered beautiful. I used to model when I was smaller and know firsthand the way bookings are done. One of my friends is a world class fitness model and bodybuilder. She did not get fitness modeling jobs until she got fake boobs and even in body building contests the fake boobs helped. It's a weird standard. Even Plus size models today are no longer big and curvy. The industry standard keeps getting smaller... For once I would love to see an actual size 14 woman model clothes in a Jessica London or Roaman's catalog. Women of all shapes and sizes should be able to be fitness or regular models.

I think that is a requirement to be a fitness model, but it is a little odd there aren't any pears out there, it seems even though it is the most common female body shape. It is a little odd.

And the plus size models used to be hourglasses. Now it is definitely hit or miss. Some people still use hourglasses, but I am also seeing a lot more rulers there too. (And this explains why most plus clothing is cut terribly!)
