Well I stand corrected if I used the wrong term. It was a term a few people described me as on here and some friends. I wanted to just post my opinion and experience. I was at 29% at same weight as well but bodyfat seems to be dropping. Thanks everyone! So at 29% bodyfat at same weight not that's skinny fat?My bodyfat is 27% im 203 6 f 1
Yeah, that's not skinny fat. That's just a little bit overweight with a little excess body fat. Not much, but a little.
If you were, say... 160 pounds and 27%, then you might be skinny fat.0 -

I have a hard time, just seeing your arm believing you're 27% body fat unless you are carrying all that weight somewhere else. How did you measure it?0 -
Oh thanks .I think your arm looks fantastic!0

Doesn't matter if you're skinny-fat, fat-fat, average, or muscular. All that matters is being happy with your body.0

If you're really interested, I'd go get a DEXA scan done. I bet you'll be pleasantly surprised. Do a google search for DEXA with your city and state, and you should be able to find a facility to have it done. It'll tell you everything you need to know about your body composition, and it's quite accurate.0 -
Thanks a lot.Skinny fat means you have very little muscle in comparison to your body fat, which comes from eating way too little calories and doing no exercise!
Trust me, you're fine, and that is one awesome arm you got there!0 -
I personally think "skinny fat" gets thrown around on this website FAR too often. And to be quite honest, I'd never heard of it until coming to this website.
I have no desire to be super ripped (and as a woman, would have to work extra hard to achieve that anyway). I don't have a desire to have visible abs or anything like that. Call me skinny fat if you want... I'm okay with it. I like who I am and am happy with it. I don't honestly care what someone else thinks of me. *shrug*
OP: I really don't think you're skinny fat.0 -
I totally agree! and well done youve done amazing0

I have one done every 6 months or so now. They aren't cheap, but it's worth it to know for sure what your body comp is if you plan on making changes.0 -
Hey, well done. Similar stats to me. Keep up the hard work0

At 10% body fat, that skinny dude isn't skinny fat. He's just skinny. No one is any kind of fat at 10%.
To really define skinny fat, you'd need to show two men who weigh the same, and are both in a healthy weight for their height , but one has 10%BF and the other has 30% BF. One would look like that muscle-bound dude, and the other would look like the marshmallow fluff. But they'd be the same weight.
^^This is EXACTLY what skinny fat is.. high BMI in a healthy weight range for you...0 -
I never heard of it before but was told i fit the scenario. But from what you all are saying maybe I'm not.I personally think "skinny fat" gets thrown around on this website FAR too often. And to be quite honest, I'd never heard of it until coming to this website.

My bodyfat is 27% im 203 6 f 1So here is my take. I was 258 lbs 4 years ago. I was a heavy kid and most of my adult life. 4 years ago after going to vacation with a friend I had a hard time keeping up and was out of breathe just walking. I also had a hard time fitting in the airplane seat. My Dr had also told me my blood pressure was high, cholesterol levels were high and my bmi had me at morbidly obese. I decided after all those embarrasing moments on vacation to lose weight. I started going to the gym and doing cardio and weightlifting. I lost 65 lbs that year. I was making sure to strength train and do cardio 4 days a week. I hit my goal! I ended with what people these days call skinny fat. Guess what? I didnt care. Why ? Because my past 4 physicals have all been great. Every single one. My dr. Was so proud she actually did not charge for my visit! Imagine that! So Yeah i dont look like a male model but guess what? I rather be skinny fat than fat fat. I also rather be healthy and mobile than 258 on my way to heart disease. End opinion.
really? what is your bodyfat %
Hey, well done. Your stats are similar to mine. Keep up the hard work!0 -
I am just curious about how you define skinny fat and why you classify yourself as such. The arm in your profile pic has really nice looking muscle tone. Am I wrong to assume that is your arm?0
-
Skinny fat usually refers to someone who is on the low end of healthy weight or underweight but with high body fat percentage.0
-
Except skinny fat isn't just about body fat. It's also about your health. If you are skinny (fat) but still have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver, etc., or are still at medium to high risk for it, what good is it?0
-
Here I thought skinny fat meant everything else on your body is small except your belly.0

I do agree, it does get thrown around a lot around here. But I first heard of it in a 2009 issue of Self magazine and well before I came here so it's not a new concept, because it's been around a few years before I heard about it. I think people only use half of the definition.0 -

I agree with this entirely, except I did know of the term before coming here.
It is tossed around too much, and too often used to describe anyone who isn't ripped. That's not what it means at all.
And just like getting ripped, it's not something that just happens accidentally. It takes a lot of effort to get to either stage, and a lot less effort just to be a normal healthy person. Getting ripped requires a lot of meticulous eating and exercise. Getting skinny fat requires a lot of bad dieting, yo-yoing, starvation, malnourishment, etc.
Like I've said before, eating right and exercising to lose weight was a LOT easier than when I ate too little for a prolonged period to become skinny fat. Some might think I dedicate a lot of time to exercise, but it's typically under an hour a day, 5-6 days a week. I spend more time per week watching Big Bang Theory reruns.0 -
You know, I just kind of hate the term "skinny fat" period. I think it's really...kind of gross.0
-
You have been added to my mental list of those who have inspired me. Thank you. Great job!0

Skinny fat is a subjective term - but you should be proud of yourself either way. There are so many who give up on weight loss so quickly - and you have PLENTY of time as well as the tools, motivation and support now to build up some muscle and lower your body fat if you so choose to do so!
To me (and this is coming from a female keep that in mind), the term "skinny fat" refers to some of the girls in my yoga class who are super tall and thin, very low BMI, thin legs - totally jealous of them - but who don't last for more than 15-20 minutes and can't hold a 'downward dog pose' for more than 2 seconds. Or my roommate who looks like a model with legs to the sky and eats anything she wants, but can't run more than one block without getting winded (and thinks that's totally ok). Really got me thinking about how I should be approaching my weight loss. I don't have much (if anything) to lose, but I need to stop focusing on the number on the scale and more on getting stronger and fitter - the rest should fall into place! What's the point of the number on the scale going down if I can't run well anymore?
Congrats on your journey so far0 -

2bgoddess, he wasn't talking about the picture when he said "high BMI". He was talking about the description underneath that compared 10% to 30%, and calling 30% a high BMI.0 -

That's my arm lol.I thought skinny fat was when you have a high fat percentage but at are a healthy weight. I am at 27% bodyfat and I am 203 lbs. I have fat in the stomach area and it's just not a tiny bit. I was at 29% bodyfat just a few weeks ago same weight. But i'm being told I may not actually be skinny fat and I guess it's also subjective. I got tons of great feedback from you all, Thanks again.I am just curious about how you define skinny fat and why you classify yourself as such.
