How can you be low carb but eat fruit?

Options
I just made myself a fruit and veggie smoothie this morning and after eating it I added in the recipe and put it in my diary. 76 freakin carbs!!

How the hell am I supposed to eat low-carb if my healthy, delicious, fruit is going to make me go over?

There's a great article about carbohydrates here: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/carbohydrates/ including all sorts of information about what carbs are good carbs vs. "bad" carbs; how to choose, etc. Not all carbs are created equal. =) I can't give you any advice towards a low-/no- carb diet (I personally believe balance is better, while making healthier choices) - I can tell you that I lost 30 lbs by focusing partly on good vs. bad carbs.

I'm not trying to go no carb and prefer not to have to go super low either. Everything I read and anyone I talk to keeps telling me I have to go low-carb in order to lose any weight. =/

Different diets work for different people, and since Adkins was such a successful diet, people like to base their knowledge off of it.

Like runningkatze says, there are different types of carbs. Namely, complex and simple. Here's another article:

    http://www.briancalkins.com/simplevscomplexcarb.htm

Carbs are *can be* bad for those who eat in excess while simple sugars can cause insulin spikes (which of course affects diabetics, but can also lead to feeling hungry again).

I eat about 100-200 carbs or so a day, and I'm still loosing weight on a fairly regular basis by sticking to natural foods.

Nice article, 86_Ohms. I love especially that the author is advocating more & smaller meals with unprocessed foods. I'm doing something similar as you, with trying to stick to more natural foods and eating smaller and more frequent meals.

You don't have to go low carb to lose weight, you can lose weight just fine on a mixed diet. In fact if you hold protein and cals constant fat loss wouldn't be significantly different on a high carb vs low carb diet

Eating more unprocessed foods is prob a good thing, but there is no real need to increase meal frequency and the author seems to not understand that simple sugars like sucrose is a moderate GI and fructose is a low GI carb. And sugar is not your worst enemy if you're shooting for fat loss

Keep in mind that there's really no such thing as a "no carb" diet. You really need to get in vegetables and they all have some amount of carbs. You can still eat fruit but stick to lower carb fruits like berries, cherries, plums and melon.

I used this article to change what kinds of fruits I eat. I've cut out fruit like grapes (my fave!) and bananas and traded them for fruits like blackberries, canteloupe and strawberries. I try to stick under 115g of carbs a day. You can check out my diary if you like. I've only been doing the low carb thing for a couple days though. I learned my lesson after I gained 2 pounds from one meal of spaghetti last week. So far I've only managed to lose one of those pounds but hopefully by eating less carbs the weight will come off quickly.

Theoretically, low-carb doesn't allow fruits. But it depends how low-carb you want to go. If you allow a closer to normal amount of carbs (100-150 g), you can have some fruit. The fruits lowest in carbs are the berries, nectarines & peaches, melons.

    A quote from the site:
The Bear has summarized it beautifully in the opening post of this thread. From his writings we know that he allows anything from the animal kingdom with the exception of lactose-containing milk. He maintains that ZC is at or around 5 grams of carbohydrate or less.

5 grams of carbs is not zero carbs.

If you want to eat low carb, I wouldn't start here for advice. Go pick up an Atkins book and read it. All the answers you need are in there.

Yes, however, many people on that site eat nothing but meat and fat so they are at 0 carbs everyday.
