  • Yeah that was horrible for sure and I would deffinately recommend ANYONE to arm themselves this day in age. I live in Canada and unfortunately for the nearsightedness of our government I cannot even apply for a concealed weapons permit. I do however have firearms at my house designed specifically for engaging a human threat, if the situation were to ever present itself - lets hope it doesn't. We live in a very cruel world with insane corrupt individuals living among us, even arming yourself sometimes isn't enough but it's an advantage that's for sure. Good thing you weren't at the club, kinda scary though.

What saddens me the most is that he had a blog and posted several videos on youtube long before this happened pretty much stating the day he would die and that "he hoped to see God soon". If someone had just seen his blog or watched his videos this may not have happened. So sad. He felt so shut out of the world and no one would listen to him.

I agree in theory, but in this particular case even if the people in the gym were licensed to carry weapons most of them would be in various stages of working out so it would be highly unlikely to see someone running with a gun on a treadmill or lifting weights or taking an aerobics class. :frown:

When I heard about that shooting I wondered if anyone on MFP went to that gym. I'm glad you weren't there Joani. I can't believe no one saw the man's posts and didn't report it. This tragedy could have been avoided.

I know two people, who have concealed carry permits. They keep their firearm in a bag with them while they work out, not locked up in the gym locker. Your right maybe....he shot up the whole class and turned the gun on himself. Who's to say he wouldn't have walked outside and started popping people in the gym or out in the parkinglot... who knows where a situation is gonna end. All I know is...9 times outta 10 I'm gonna have the upper hand...not some POS loser whining about how he hated women and took it out on some innocent people.

Point is...i'm not waiting for the cops to come defuse a situation, if I have the chance to do it. If it takes a minute to kill a bunch of people in a class. It only takes me 5 seconds to reach into my bag and take them down. Case closed.
Here in KC last year, we had this nutjob pull into a parkinglot. Stepped out his vehicle, blasted two people in the cars next to him. Started shooting people in the parkinglot. Then walked into a Target (no pun intended) and started shooting people there. Finally 20 minutes later, an off-duty police officer showed up with a shotgun, chased him down inside the store and killed him. My gym was two stores down from the Target.

I'm from Pittsburgh too, and joining you all in praying for everyone involved in this sad, sad event.

Carrying a gun is not for me, but I would never fault anyone who does so for their own self defense.

I often times have also longed for 'Wild West' justice. But I'm not certain in this case if it would have helped for every single person to have had a side arm with them. It just happened so quickly.

This kind of thing effects me greatly because of the senselessness of it all. Bless every one of you. May may you all remain safe and sound and live long and happy lives.

I agree with you, it is senseless. But I don't think exercising your rights as a citizen of the U.S. is "wildwest justice." I understand for many people, owning or firing a firearm is scary or overwhelming. Its not about guns or blowing the bad guys away. Its about your right as a citizen
and a human being, to protect yourself and your family. Just something to think about.

When you've had a gun stuck in your face in the suburbs of all places, believe me...it changes your perspective.

I agree. I've never had a gun stuck in my face but I'm looking into a gun safety course because I want to buy a gun for my own protection before I lose that right.

I'm not exaggerating when I say this. I've been deployed twice to combat zones. I've had many times where I felt less safe or pulled into an potentially violent altercation here in the U.S. I'm not someone who looks for trouble.

Carrying a firearm isn't just about defense, you learn alot of other techniques and awareness skills that most people roam freely without. Understanding where you are, who's around you, and how to get outta situations... is what keeps you from having to use a weapon to defend yourself. This is in no way saying that women are clueless, cause men are just as guilty too.... but people just walk around blind. This gym-shooting situation might have been prevented if maybe members of the gym would have watched this guy. Or some of the gym employee's. Maybe blogger friends that failed to alert someone that this guy was saying some really "hateful" and "violent" things. Its easy to say that when hindsight is 20/20. But there are alot of behaviors and mannerisms that if your looking for them.... they can tip you off when someone is exhibiting odd behavior. Maybe next time...when people keep their peepers peeped.... might stop something like this from happening. YOu don't have to walk around life scared... but no place is safe if you got your head up your *kitten*.

I had an army buddy. We came back from deployment. He murdered his ex-wife, her daughter from another relationship...and she was pregnent. Afterwards, when i realized he was zoning out. He gained weight. He was drinking alot. Kinda distant. He bought some guns. He stopped showing up for drill duty. Nobody knew. We failed to act. I lost a good friend, who's rotting away in prison right now. Three people died (to include the unborn child).

    Just food for thought.

Good post Sarge. I'm a pretty paranoid person and I always try to be aware of my surroundings. My son was jumped by three thugs several years ago. The sad thing is maybe it could have been prevented. He knew they were following him when he got off a Metro bus and was walking home. My son had a headset on listening to a cd but was still aware he was being followed. The three thugs jumped him from behind just inside our apartment complex. All my son had was his cheap cd player and a bag with a maybe 3-4 items of groceries. No money or anything of any value. He wasn't seriously hurt, thankfully, but he maybe could have went into a business or something until they finally went on their way. In that case I don't think calling the police would have done any good because after he got jumped, he called the police and they never did respond. But it's definitely good to be aware of your surroundings and take preventative measures.

And Sarge, I'm so sorry about the situation with your friend.

Thanks for that. We did such a great job coming home safe from a safe deployment; didn't lose an aircraft or a soldier. Only to come home, safe, to lose one.

Glad to hear your son was alright. I'm sure that was a good lesson for him though. It blows my mind, how many people I see walking around with their cell phones. Nearly walking in and out of a dangerous situation. Whether it be leaving themselve vulnerable to an attack or just merely walking out in front of a vehicle. Its like we've gotten so accustom and distracted by our toys and devices.... you might as well just go jump off a cliff. I've had to check myself quite a few times..for letting my cell phone get the best of me.

I lived in a really bad apartment complex for years. I never had any problems personally until the last month before I moved out. Thank god, I gotta outta that place. It was so bad. I came home from work one evening. A long day, I was tired. just wanted to go retreat to my room and sleep. I'm waiting on the elevator. This guy in the lobby is gettin into an arguement with his wife. No big deal, nothing new in this building. But it starts to escalate. I'm praying the elevator would hurry up, cause I didn't want to get involved. He's screaming and calling her some really nasty names. She's hovering down and he finally throws her into the corner of the room.... and I'm thinking he is about to hit her. I turn around and asked him to leave.

I knew he wasn't a resident. This was a private lobby. I lived here, so it was time for his *kitten* to leave.
He runs up and gets right in my face. Screaming at me. Calling me racial slurs (i'm white, you get the drift.) I about snapped. I wanted to put that guy in a hospital. I realized he was strung out on drugs, cause his pupils were dialated. I had my hand on my weapon, just waiting for him to do something.
Finally I grab my phone with the other hand, hit 9-11 on speed dial in my pocket. I told him, he better hit the sidewalk....or he was gonna take a trip to the hospital.

Finally my buddy came down, who is like 300 lbs 6-6 and did security in the building at night. I finally put the guy in a headlock, my buddy grabbed his feet, and we threw him outta the building. The cops never showed up after calling them twice. By that point the guy was long gone. The woman ran upstairs.

A week later, he stabbed her in the head with a screwdriver and was arrested.

I should have snapped his neck.
