I love to tan, but I've only ever faked n baked (used a tanning bed) about 8 times in my entire life, and it was before a vacation. Anyways, I love to sit outside in the summer, with a little sunscreen, get some natural healthy sunshine.

Then, you see the people in the middle of January who are overly tan, either from a tanning bed or spray tan, and it's almost horrifying. I know that people want to keep tan, but I just find this kind of gross.

I thought of this because of all the men and women in figure competitions who are very heavily tanned, or spray tanned and it just looks so bad. They have these awesome bodies, but the spray tan makes them look weird.

My point:
spray tan = icky
overbaked = icky

You do know they have to do this or the lights wash them out and muscle definition isn't noticeable? Kind of defeats the purpose of the competition. The dark tan is used like stage makeup.

Got to agree. I always found pale sexier. Never understood the concept of flirting with cancer for the sake of vanity.

Agreed! They remind me of the lil' Oompa Loompa guys on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... and they think they look hot. I think it looks gross.

    That.

Though I do agree, people tend to overdo the tanning outside of muscle competitions. There's one girl I know in one of my classes at college, and she looks completely overdone the entire year. And she is definitely NOT a bodybuilder; she is just really into that prepped-up, overdone look. More power to her, but it just looks like it takes so much effort to maintain, haha.

I agree... walking around looking like an oompa loompa, even with a kicking body, is NOT sexy!

Was about to say that - but besides that, I agree. I've always found fair skin faaaaaaar more attractive, and the paler the better in my opinion.

i've always liked really pale girls my self.. but the bodybuilder pick.. that isn't her actual color.. just something they put on to show more definition.

The point of the heavy coat of spray tan for competitors is to better show the definition in their muscles. If it isn't heavy enough then their stage look will be too pale. A friend of mine got 2 coats his first competition thinking it would be enough but on stage, he looked white. Competitors are the only people I can really understand getting the stuff. Everyone else...I agree. It's ridiculous and looks horrible.

At my gym I was floored by a poster hanging up trying to "sell" the tanning memberships it said

"who ever heard of tall pale and handsome?"

    Rude lol
  • Im a redhead and totally pale so everyone looks like an oompa loompa next to me LOL!!!

I find this amusing sine I don't tan often but being Anemic and genetically prone to being insanely pale, I was seriously just thinking about tanning, (In my defense I had 5 people asking me if I was starring in the next twilight movie.) However, I might just go with the whole pale vampire look instead.

Love that sunkissed look, but don't over do it! No need to wear a leather jacket under your swinsuit!

Ick! Too much sun/fake tan is bad... but people will tan darker just for competitions, it helps make the muscles stand out ... note the white face vs. the body.

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP POSTING TOPICS ABOUT WHAT IS/ISN'T ATTRACTIVE.

Say I happen to think BLONDES ARE UGLY, would it be ok for me to post a topic about it how gross they look to justify my point?

Jeez, attractivness is ALL about opinions. I don't know why you need to try to bring other people down with your opinions. What a rude thing to do.

And yeah, excessive suntanning is UNHEALTHY, but that is a DIFFERENT topic.
  • It's your opinion. Obviously, there is a balance, there CAN be too much of a good thing. I like to do Versa Tan (spray tan... I hate tanning beds + they're bad for the skin), and it doesn't make me look orange.

Why bother if it makes these people happy with their appearance?

It's my opinion, and I stated it bluntly. Have a problem, go to a different topic. Nowhere in MFP does it say I don't have the right to post my opinion.

I'm not trying to bring people down, but honestly if you are orange or 30 shades tanner than your natural complexion, it's just not nice looking (IM....in case your gonna badger me again)

Personally people telling other people what to post is way more annoying and judgmental to me than someone discussing what they find attractive or not.

    Good point.

But I don't think this topic then belongs under "fitness and exercise"....And also, is just opens up a can of worms and doesn't do anything constructive.
Yeah, you aren't TECHNICALLY doing anything wrong, there is nothing wrong with going out there and spreading negativity. KEEP IT UP WOMAN, that's EXACTLY what the world needs more of.

And less stupid blonds. That's also what the world needs.

    Hypocritical much?
  • Tanning makes me feel more confident and it makes me feel better about myself. I use the VersaSpa spray tan at Club Sun and it looks super natural, not orange at all. I recently started laying in the tanning bed again (going on a cruise in a couple weeks), OVER exposure is what causes cancer, be that with the sun or the tanning bed. I agree that the "leathery" look is not attractive but I personally find someone with a tan more attractive. To each their own.

Men are simple creatures. Criticising someone for ciriticising someone and then criticising a group of people. Only a woman could understand the logic.
