How do you keep up the healthy eating on holiday?

I am going on holiday for 2 weeks all-inclusive soon and I was just wondering how you manage to stay on the band wagon?
I'm telling myself that I am going to limit my eating (but not my drinking) go to the gym everyday, do laps in the pool, aqua aerobics and bike rides.
But saying and doing are two different things.
Need to stay down because am a bridesmaid 5 months after I get back.
Thanks!!

I am not sure how much weght you have lost but for me all I need to do is think about what I was like before I lost 4 stone. i hated being over weight and this motivates me to stay on the wagon so to speak. For me I think you should have a comprimise. Eat well and treat yourself every now and then, couple that with some daily exercise, 30 mins or so and you wont have any problems.0

I tend not to worry too much about it on holiday because I get up a lot later so breakfast and lunch tend to be one meal, plus we do a lot of walking throughout the day. It's the alcohol that I need to worry about, if it wasn't for that I'd lose loads of weight on every holiday.0

last october i went on a month of roadtripping around the us & i actually lost weight by eating A LOT at subway .. like seriously if i had gone to the same one, we would've been on birthday gift exchanging .. of course we also went to other less ehh low fat places but due to all the walking it worked itself out.
so i definitely think you can manage if you just hit the pool a lot. (: & sign up for excursions with loads of walking involved!
edited because i fail at life aka spelling. -______-0 -
I have a very similar problem...I go to an all inclusive in June for 2 weeks and can't wait, but I'm a bridesmaid within 4 weeks of getting back! I want to lose weight before I go, have got to be realistic about putting some on on holiday and then JUMP back on the bandwagon and hammer the gym when I get back!!
Might have to drag the other half on walks whist we are away and eat plenty of fish and veggies (hmmm...that's the plan at least!)
Good luck!
Oh, and drink plenty of water too0 -
Eat fruit for breakfast, salad for lunch, then a free for all at dinner. Stick to vodka or bacardi and diet coke and get 1 hour of activity in a day. A few lbs will fall off when you get back. Most importantly have FUN! X0

is it wrong that i chose a hotel with a gym and used made sure to use it three times a week on my fortnight holiday
i did go all inclusive and made full use of the food and drink - i was never scared of weight gain or what I ate, its only two weeks in the grand scheme of things and thats what holidays are for :bigsmile:0 -
I normally lose weight on holidays as I tend to walk a lot. Food wise and drink wise I suggest you enjoy yourself but not using it as a pure excuse to binge. Get in exercise activities so you have a good mix of a holiday. Enjoy!0

I just got back from 10 days in the States (were food is bigger, tastier and oh so often fried and/or full of chocolately deliciousness!). I tried to be more mindful about what I was eating and I tried to workout most days. I ate a lot of fish (but also drank a lot of cocktails :drinker: )
I still gained 4 lbs, but most of it was water weight from flying. When I weighed in again after a few days I had only gained 1.5 lbs after all. II reckonthatwas not bad considering I ate and drank a LOT of yummy food. I also wanted to enjoy my trip, so I had a few indulgences. However I didn't eat like a mad woman (like I could have done, trust me!) and was actually looking forward to getting back to my "normal" food by the end of the trip. Infact I went straight to the supermarket and binge-bought soinach, broccoli, kale and a ton of other veggies!
My advice would be to eat some nice things, but don't go mental, listen to your body (ie stop eating when full and not when the brekfast bugffet has run out), drink LOADS of water and get some exercise. Oh, and have fun! :happy:0 -
I like to exercise, especially running and so keeping that going on holiday is both enjoyable and great for keeping me on track. Walking and swimming are also great things to add in that you may not do a lot of in everyday life.
But whether you exercise or not my tips are:
Drop the snacks. Eat three nice meals a day and forget "between meals"
For each of your three meals; have two that are really good. For the third either pick a good main and a dessert as a treat or make the main a treat and forget the dessert.
No alcohol until 7pm.
For all inclusive buffets I make one visit per course. No going back. If I see lots of things i like I have a little bit of each, but all in one visit.
Don't eat the kids mistakes... different countries means different foods and often my children will pick something that they find they don't like. In the past I'd wolf it down, but not anymore.
Think quality not quantity... if the hotel specialises in say ice cream then ice cream may be a great use of some cals. But if the ice cream is mass produced low quality do you really want to use up a couple of hundred calories on it?
You can enjoy treats on holiday without crashing the diet, you don't have to deny yourself but you just need to realise that every meal can not be an indulgence. for me buffets are a danger zone but they also mean that i can have bacon, eggs and fruit for breakfast (which is something I find healthy but don't always get the chance to have at home).
caution: it is common to gain weight on holiday. For some this may be some fat but for most people the gain is retained fluids. Alcohol, Flying, heat, change in diet composition are all factors which can lead to more retained fluids. So when you get home and step on the scales don't be too disheartened if they show a gain. Most of that gain will go with a week of eating and drinking normally.
Best wishes and have a great holiday.0 -
Enjoy your holiday, that's what you off to do, and if, as is normal you do a lot of sight-seeing and walking around it may well ballance out. Remember your going on holiday to have a good time not going on holiday to diet, good luck and keep focused0

When I'm on holidays I definitely relax a little more about my diet (I'm sure skinny people do that too!), but at the same time, I try to make good choices when out for dinner and I will ensure to be very active.
If I gain 2 lbs or so, who cares, they'll come off when I'm back in my normal routine.
Enjoy yourself!!0 -

Oh, I did that too!!! I've previously used the gym on holiday most days and really enjoyed it too - except not taking my proper trainers with me! This one has a 24 hour gym so may have to sneak out in the middle of the night and lay off the cocktails a bit We'll see...OH may not be too chuffed if I keep going to the gym on holiday lol
Anyway - you have killer burns so should surely burn it off when you get back0 -
When I go all inclusive I swap traditional breakfast foods for fruit and yoghurt, and have a massive salad with all my meals. This way I can eat what I want, as long as I have filled up first on the less bad options, if that makes sense! I also limit alcohol to two 'proper' nights out and the rest 'taking it easy'. If I swim / walk etc in addition to this I usually manage to maintain, or at least only gain a pound or two.
Remember though, you're on holiday so you should ENJOY yourself!! Worst case you'll have to work hard for a month when you come back to lose the excess baggage!0 -
All you can eat destinations are great because they have tons of fresh fruit, salad fixings, and usually seafood choices. Just fill your plate with 1/2 vegetables, 1/4 fruits, and 1/4 lean meat at each meal and you will be fine. Eat yogurt or cottage cheese. Drink plenty of water.
Have fun and remember to exercise - long walks, dancing, bike rides, kayaking, hiking, and swimming all count:)0 -
I don't worry about it. It's the last thing I want to be consciously thinking about on holidays.
But I have gotten into the habit of eating smaller portions, making slightly better choices etc. Eat whatever you fancy, but don't eat too much of it.
Exercise wise, I don't gym during holidays, but we might walk a lot to see things rather than take a taxi etc0 -
i spend 3 or for months travelling every winter and if i log i stay the same, simple! logging means even if you over indulge you know how much over indulgence has been had, not logging and keeping yourself in the dark as to where your at with everything means a gain for sure. keep focused on being a bridesmaid, and don’t beat yourself up if things dont go to plan, just get straight back on it when you come back, and most importantly have a wicked time xx0

All very good advice, thanks guys!!
Last year I was 13st 4lb before I started dieting and I went on my 2 week all-inclusive holiday having lost a stone at 12st 4lb but when I got home I had put on 9 lbs and was 12st 13.
Now I've lost a stone again and am 11st 13, I know it's inevitable to put on weight which I don't mind but 9lb again is too much.
I will be eating a lot of fruit and salad, but this year at breakfast I will stop when I'm full instead of having pankcakes french toast and a salmon bagel etc.0
