Cooking Spray

I know that cooking spray is one of those foods that is "calorie free" but has calories. The nutrition label says a 1/4 second spray has 0 calories. I went to the Pam's Cooking Spray website and it's confusing:noway: - I *think* it says that a 1 second spray has 7 calories, but I'm not sure.

Anyone ever looked into this before? Thanks! :flowerforyou:

  • I think "calorie free" foods should be banned  it's so confusing. That's something I would definitely like to know. As confusing as the calorie count for Pam may be, it's still less calories than cooking with olive oil (which I do sometimes for the health benefits) or ::shudder:: dreaded butter.

Yea... unless you have someone that is going to stand next to you with a stop watch when you use it, the nutrition info is essentially useless. I cook things in the oven a lot and use butter flavored spray, so I'm sure if adds up quickly. For now, I'm using 7 calories per 1 second spray and estimating, but it shouldn't be this difficult! :ohwell:

anyone ever notice if Pam is flammable? If it can ignite or combust you can bet it has some form of stored energy. Keep that in mind since no one will ever convince me that a flammable liquid is free of calories. Now I still use oil sprays, especially for things like eggs or pancakes, lets face it, half a second spray is much quicker than melting a chink of butter. That doesn't mean at all that I don't use oil (vegetable, olive, sesame or others) and I still use butter in the food, for instance those pancakes I mentioned are from scratch with butter, eggs, sugar. Everything we're told to eliminate.

Butter is not evil, it's inanimate.

I bought an oil pump spray for 15 dollars at Wms Sonoma.

I put Olive Oil in it and love it!! Sprays just the same and I know what is in it....Olive Oil!!:flowerforyou:

One way to calculate the calories in oil spray is to use a food scale. You can either weigh your pan before and after you spray it (not so practical for large pans) or just spray the same amount you would normally use onto a piece of foil or saran wrap and weigh that. Oil contains 9 calories per gram, so just multiply by the number of grams you're using. If it's less than one gram, then I'd say 7 calories is a safe bet.

I have one for cooking and one for salads. I love fresh pressed OO on a salad, but could only get it in a greasy glop. Now I spray my salad after it is all ready (nothing will cling to the lettuce if sprayed before!)
I use some sore of vinegar, sprinkle with italian spices and then spritz.:flowerforyou:
