Heart rate monitor question? Afterburn, or just a crap model

Okaaaaaaaay, so I got my HRM the other day. It has a cute little chest strap (makes me feel all professional and proper ^_^) and a watch. The watch is kinda confusing, but I'm sort of getting there.

Anyway, I slaved away on the stepper today, for about 15-20 minutes. The machine told me 100+ cals, but I don't trust it. The HRM told me 104 by the time I'd finished. However, out of interest, I started it up again when I was sitting down, checked it in like 2.4 seconds, and it was all of sudden at 114!!

So, is it just afterburn, or is my HRM just crap?

I just don't wanna be overestimating calorie burn >:(

Also, can anyone recommend some that are fairly cheap (max £40), simple to use and reliable?

Thanks in advance :)

HRM's are not meant to be worn at rest.. so disregard anything shown while you were resting and just count anything that you did during exercise.

That doesn't sound like an over estimate. Sometimes I burn 80 calories in 6-8 minutes. It really just depends on how hard you push yourself. As for after burn, I usually stop my HRM once my heart rate gets to 100.

A GOOD HRM is hard to come by for only $40. I bought a Polar FT4 for about $70 and it's awesome and reliable ( so about 55 euros)

HRM doesn't measure afterburn. It only estimates calories burned while doing aerobic exercise. Heartrate while not doing aerobic exercise is not an indicator of calories burned.
