From a Personal Trainer: Drink Pee to Lose Weight? - the HCG

The HCG diet is the latest weight loss craze! Becky lost 80 pounds by simply changing their diet and taking drops of HCG on the tongue!

...At least, that's what my client told me. I bowed my head in dismay as she told me that she had purchased HCG and was about to start the "diet".

Most people don't have any idea what HCG (Human Choreonic Gonadotropin) is or where it comes from.

The hormone is produced in the bodies of pregnant females and plays a role in transfering fat from the woman to her developing fetus. The idea behind the HCG weight loss program is that supplemental HCG will help mobilize stubborn body fat, even though you're not pregnant. The seemingly new weight loss craze has been around for several decades and has had TONS of clinical trials. The weight loss program has participants consuming a measly 500 calories a day from low or no carbohydrate sources. But where do they extract a hormone that's created by pregnant women?

From the pee of pregnant women...but it gets worse.

If you can stomach drinking a woman's urine for the sake of shedding some unwanted weight and think you're all good, keep in mind that the HCG extract shows no beneficial effect. The University of Stellenbosch's Department of Medical Physiology and Biochemistry concluded, "Subjects receiving HCG injections showed no advantages over those on placebo".

In other words, people who starve themselves and drink pee lose weight because they starve themselves, not because they're drinking pee.

Are there any redemptive qualities to HCG?

YES! and it's good news for pregnant women...for some reason, the natural production of HCG works differently in the body than drinking pee. If you have stubborn fat or cellulite in hard to reach areas, your body will burn through it quickly if you exercise and watching your nutrition during the months you're breast-feeding.

SO...if you want to lose fat, ditch the HCG...or get pregnant.

I was trying to figure out what that diet name was... my friends did this last month, I told her that this 'diet' was not a good idea... I haven't spoken to her since, I think she was a little peeved with me.

As I remember, she said she would take the drop 2 times a day (?) and then have a small portion of protine (Salmon) and a serving of veggies. At that time she had lost 21 lbs and she was only 2 weeks into it.

Thanks for posting this, what a scary diet.

... sorry me again, the food that I listed was what she told me was her daily food intake... that was only maybe 500 calories. I asked what type of exercise she was doing and she said that she was only to do light walking... I think only because she would only have enough energy to do that bit of exercise.

Gosh....I always shudder when people go on this diet...however, I am curious about saying that the HCG makes burning fat more effective while Breastfeeding? How is that? I know for sure that HCG isn't present while breastfeeding (well, it is right after giving birth, because obviously the levels have to deplete back to 0 after being pregnant, but that doesn't count. lol) so is it a lasting effect or something? I'd love to see more information about that!
  • Good luck with your weight loss goals, but the HCG diet is not a safe way to jump start the process. I know people that tried it and had horrible experiences. Yes, they lost weight fast, but they were tired and sick most of the time they were on 500 calories, and then when they started eating in a normal, healthy calorie range again, they regained rapidly -- even though they were eating healthy and exercising. So basically, it's just another yo yo fad diet, but more dangerous than most because of the extremely low calorie limitations.

The only reason people lose weight on that plan is you are only allowed to eat 500 calories a day. HCG has been scientifically proven to do NOTHING to help with weight loss or to make it safe to eat only 500 calories a day. It will not protect muscle, reset your metabolism or do anything else the snake oil salesmen that sell it claim. Dr. Simeons was a quack doctor. His "HCG protocol" has absolutely NO scientific backing and is not worth risking your health on.

The HCG diet has been studied by many scientific organizations, and they all concluded that HCG, even the "real" injectable version, is no more effective than a placebo, and eating only 500 calories a day for weeks, as recommended by that plan, can cause more health problems than it solves.

The MFP moderators have been cautioning members against attempting that diet because it is so dangerous.

I know people that put their faith in the HCG diet, and became very ill from malnutrition as a result. Then they regained more weight than they lost. Now they wish they never heard of HCG.

The Government is now in the process of getting all that fraudulent stuff off the market, and it's about time!
