Loving my green smoothies for breakfast!

  • For those that add the whey protein powder, does it make it frothy, almost mousse-like? I blended milk, a frozen banana and a scoop of chocolate whey protein isolate and it was so thick and mousse-like that I couldn't drink it. The flavor was good but the texture was awful.

So glad this was posted because I wanted to start doing green smoothies. Can anyone suggest a blender? I need a new one as mine doesn't blend ice very well anymore.

my guess would be not enough liquid because frozen banana is like ice cream when blended. i would either use more milk or add some yogurt or something. you will probably get a lot of opinions on the blender, but my personal favorite is the ninja.

I usually put just half a scoop of whey, though I recently changed to hemp protein powder, the less animal products in my life the better :)

I also recommend the Vitamix. It is an expensive blender but it is amazing. They have a great warranty and great customer service.

    and it lasts a lifetime.

i cant say the same about any of the others ive had (including my old kitchenaid blender, and the ninja). my cousin has had hers for 25 years. almost as long as ive been alive. and i love that its multi-purpose, not just a blender. i make soups in it all the time - and i use it for chopping stuf that i cant (onions). i want to get the grains attachment, but i dont NEED it at the moment

We are just starting to drink these. This is what we did yesterday, it made 4 cups worth that I divided into three servings for my sons & me.

    3 cups spinach
    1 cup skim milk
    1 cup orange juice
    1 banana
    2 cups frozen pineapple

    182 cals per serving

Tomorrow we are trying one with blueberries and strawberries, though they might not likt that it won't be as green as the other.

Spinach you don't have to blend much, it pretty much melts into the smoothie....you can puts tons of spinach in there and not even taste it.

Kale is great to put in smoothies. It's the healthiest coniferous veggie, however, that's a pain to blend and you can taste it easily. To help hide the flavor, pure grape fruit juice works good or any strong juice instead of milk.

Every time I work out I have

    -4 cups of spinach
    -1/2 nonfat greek yogurt
-1 cup of plain almond milk
    -1 tablespoon of peanut butter
    -1 frozen banana.

    It's soo soo good!

holy moly! That sounds so good, Ill have to try it! I bet its even better with almond butter instead of peanut butter. Try that, the almond milk will go yummy with it.

Some sweet recipes!! I've done green monster-type smoothies for ages but recently I've been improvising too much and they've been tasting like vomit. (FYI, grapefruit, spinach, hemp protein powder and cranberry smoothies are disgusting.)

I like adding collard greens to mine :) Just the leafy part, no stem. Gives it a lovely color and flavor, without overpowering the fruit.

Another one of my faves: cucumber, kiwi, and mint. Soooo refreshing in the morning!

If you like adding spinach to your smoothies try adding carrots. I add them and don't even taste it!

They all sound awesome! I've heard you have to seriously blend the spinach, though. Is that right?
And since you like Chobani...have you tried the passion fruit? ah-mazinggg!! and I don't even like Chobani! I normally go for yoplait light but my husband insisted I tried it :P

    Just tried Chobani pomegranate today....delish!

Thanks for the thread - so many yummy new green smoothie recipes to try! Here's my fave:

    1 cup vanilla almond milk
    1 banana
    1 TBS almond butter
    1 TBS ground flax seed
    1 cup frozen blueberries
    2 cups spinach

    Delicious and invigorating!

As far as blenders I recently invested in a Vitamix and I love that thing. I had a Ninja for a bit before but it just didn't blend veggies to the consistency that I needed for them to taste good. The Vitamix rocks.

I use SoDelicious Sugar free Vanilla Coconut milk (sweetened with stevia) as the base
Handful of: Kale, Spinach, chunk of Cucumber
    Scoop of Vanilla Whey powder
4 frozen strawberries or a chunk of green apple (low glycemic)

Yum......! And VITAMIX all the way =)))

Wow all of them sound super yummy!!
Any idea if they freeze well?? I'm thinking of making them in big batches so save time.
Will they lose their nutrional value if I freeze them??

You cannot taste the spinach!! I use the frozen spinach but it is purely for nutritional value.
