Substitutes for potato?

What do you have with your evening / big meal of the day?
I am trying to eat less carbs, but I'm not very imaginative and often do boiled potatoes in the skins.
Is sweet potato any better?

Just more veg would be my advice, where you might do carrots and broccoli, add in some green beans or peas or cabbage or cauliflower cheese.0

Sweet potato is an excellent substitute. Only do 4 oz.0

I know that sweet potato is a little better. It's lower in GI but it's still very high in carbs. Cauliflower is great, it's really low in carbs and does a great mash like mash potatoes and there was a recipe in the food section on how to make a sort of rice, it's cooked in the microwave but not boiled with water. Sounds great, I haven't tried it yet but really want to.0

^^^ I would recommend Sweet potato too ^^^0 -
I tend to stack high on veg/salad - like 3/4 of my plate will be stacked high up to 400g of vegetables - so filling and low calorie0

cauliflower is a great sub, as you can mash it, and also use it in place of bread (like pizza crust). Also, be wary of veg's that are really more carb than veg, such as white potatoes, peas and corn. Hope this helps0

Sweet potatoes are excellent--lots of fiber and vitamin A. Potatoes aren't bad for you, though, they also have fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.0

Love sweet potatoes! I put Tony's spicy cajun seasoning on them. I either bake til french fry crunchy or just cook whole in the microwave. I also love frozen mixed veggies as a side. Grilled asparagus too!0

Why limit it to 4 oz?0 -
What about quinoa? It's a great grain! I love it but don't cook it with water--I use fat free organic chicken stock and it gives it a nice flavor...you can add sautéed onion and garlic to it as well. SO SO SO GOOD!!0

I've tried a couple different ideas. My favorite is roasted butternut squash!0

Cauliflower is creat There are so many ways you can make it. If you use a cheese shredder you can "rice" it.. Steam for a couple minutes and it looks and tastes just like rice. Steam it and mash it.. Add a little broth and a touch of butter and you have mashed potatoes. My absolute favorite though is roasted.. Cut to bite size pieces and drizzle with EVOO and some fresh garlic cloves and roast until tender. I like adding other veggies to my cauliflower.. Carrots roast really well too.0

I don't think there are any substitutes for potatoes - but I guess that depends on home much you love potatoes! I'd rather have a smaller portion than not have them!
I sometimes 'roast' some white potato and sweet potato or other root veggies together but I don't see them as bad and I wouldn't cut them out of my diet!0 -
Sweet Potatoes here as well but any other ideas besides cauliflower as i'm not to keen on the cauliflower myself.0

Great advise! I made mashed cauliflower earlier this week and it was GREAT! I did add just a little bit of instant potatoes to help with the consistency but not enough to throw off the whole point in the cauliflower. It was also super easy!!!
I chopped 1 head of cauliflower, put it into a steamer that then goes into the microwave..cooked until very soft..added 1 Tbs light butter, 1 scoop of ricotta cheese (just happened to have some leftover and thought sounded good), salt, pepper, garlic powder and just a splash of milk...mashed it all up and it was done. The whole family loved it!0 -

Have you considered a better managed amount of potatos?0 -
Sweet potato is still pretty high in carbs and calories, not a lot of difference from an ordinary potato. But it does have other good stuff in it, so it's useful to switch around now and then.
I'd just have extra green veg - salmon fillet with brocoli and a tomato salad, say, or fish with dressed spinach, chicken kebabs with peas and asparagus.0 -
Thanks guys that's a big help.
I do usually have 2 types of veg with evening meal but time to have couple of less potatoes and more veggies I think!0 -
Portion control. When I eat potatoes ( White or Sweet) I only eat 4-6 oz. It's not about deprivation it's about moderation and control.
If you don't have a food scale, get one. Its the best thing I did for weight loss.0 -
