A half a pound isn't even enough to call water retention. It's literally NOTHING.

Probably water. How long have you been lifting? More than a few months? If so, then maybe muscle. If not, then doubtful. Most likely just water. We women fluctuate like crazy. Don't sweat it.

Do you have access to a scale that estimates your body fat percentage? Or to a hand-held device? Or to calipers? That's how you would tell, although I wouldn't rely on one isolated reading; I would take several readings over the course of a few weeks.

i really felt disheartened aswel, but the first week of joining this i lost half a pound so i do think it is something as all the halfs can add up and make a whole

If you have been watching your cals and working out and know you should have lost then it is probably water. I gained 6lbs one Monday(that was weigh in day at the time). Well my trainer told me probably gained muscle. I was like ok. Well on Thursday I decided to weigh again(it was really bothering me)...not only was that 6 gone but one more. So, I would weigh again in a few days and see what happens. My guess is it will be gone.

Could be water, could be a random scale fluctuation.

Like others have said, if you've stayed at your calorie goal, I doubt it's fat.

Fat doesn't turn into muscle...you can empty your fat cells of their reserves (Loosing weight) and you can build upon muscle you currently have...however building muscle takes lots of active engagement of the muscles in question and a good amount of protien and amino acids in your diet...

1/2 lb gaining/loosing is not a big deal and can be so for a variety of factors - how much water you are retaining - what you eat could have an effect (i.e. ate to much sodium the day) - your digestion could play a part - all sorts of factors...it is a cummulative effect...I have had weeks where I go up a lb and then the next week I am down 2 lb's

It's most likely water weight. If you are dieting and not doing heavy lifting (weights) you are unlikely to gain enough muscle to offset fat/muscle loss. Stick with your program and give it time.

Your leader is giving you false information. Fat does not turn to muscle. And if you're not lifting, there's no way you gained any muscle.
