I miss Alaska...(hiking)

If you live somewhere nice (like Alaska) and you can get near good some hiking trails try to do a 1-2 hour hike. My wife and I use to do an 8 mile hike every weekend. The first time I logged it as exercise I thought it had to be wrong. At about 2 hours you burn between 500-1000 calories depending on your pace and the terrain and I personally didn't even think of it as exercise.

Funny I live in the mountains of NC and we never think to hike - we're typically at a baseball field or on the bike trail (this trail is in town) as our outdoor activity - we need to venture into the mountains
  • Something else that'll get the heartrate up is being 2 miles into your hike and seeing 2 bear cubs and having no idea where momma bear is. Needless to say we turned immediately around at that point and called it a day.

That would do more than raise my heartrate - I think that would be the cure to the question on the constipation thread!

I thought for sure my wife was gonna do just that. Should have seen the way she was shaking she was so scared.

    I can see why...

one time we were driving to Myrtle Beach on Hwy 22 if anyone knows it - you know there's literally nothing on it - it's a cut around a city....and if you have to go you either hold it half hour or stop and use the grass....well my son needed to pee...we told him his options and he decided to wait...then he said I can't hold it - as we decide to slow down, we see a moma bear and her baby cub right on the side of the highway - yes on the coast 10 minutes from the ocean - he decided very quickly he didn't need to go that bad! We found out later than animal control was able to trap them and move them to a safer area...

Where did you live in AK? We used to live there too. How long along where you there? Where did you like to hike? My husband and I liked Flat Top. That is GREAT exercise!

Stationed at Elmendorf and lived in Eagle River. Was there from about 2002-2007. Yea know the whole time I was there I never hiked Flat Top. We always just went to the Eagle River Nature Center since it was about 15 min up the road from the house.

I LOVE HIKING!!!! I live in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada. There are lots of hiking trails and conservation areas around. My favourite hike is going into the Niagara Gorge. You're right about those calories burned. It's the best hike because once you get down there you have no choice but to get your tookiss back up the escarpment. What a workout!!! And there's always such beautiful scenery when you hike in nature. I can honestly say that it's my therapy ... it clears my mind of all the junk. I can't praise it enough.

My husband in active duty. He's in the Guard. He is from Sitka, AK origially. We have family in Wasilla, Anchorage, Kenai, Sitka. Flat Top is a GREAT day. You should go back for a visit and do it. We left in 2003, but go back as often as we can. LOTS of friends there as well as family.

We never did. Steve's brother just retired from the Coast Guard and moved to Wasilla though and Steve has an aunt and uncle and some cousins in Wasilla. Flat Top gets your blood flowing and is so fun. Great Memories! We'd hoped to get back this summer and hiking was one of the things we wanted to do. Looks like it will be May though. It just isn't working out for August.

How is your weight loss coming? How long have you been on here?

You are doing GREAT on your weight loss! How long have you been at it??

I used to live in California and my husband and I would go hiking all the time...Yosemite, Angeles National Forest, Sequioa National Park, the Santa Monica mountains, etc. I really miss our camping trips in the backcountry. We would always try to push ourselves and make a new goal for each trip. The best thing about hiking (for me) was that I could spend time with my husband, exercise, and get some head-clearing time with nature all at the same time!!

I'm currently stationed near Marysville, CA. Too damn hot. I'm reluctant to take the kids out in that heat though maybe it's just an excuse. Think as soon as it starts getting cooler I'll have to track down some good trails.

I just did a 5 mile hike yesterday here in the SF Bay area, it was quite strenuous! I burned 700 cal in just under 2 hours....it was perfect weather too, not too hot. GreenEyedMonster, you could come over to the coast where it's foggy in the summer and not worry about the heat while hiking!!

We go up to the Niagara region in ontario every year for a few days and my favourite part is walking all the trails and then attempting the hike to the top of the tower at Queenston Heights! It took me forever a couple years ago, I didnt attempt it last year, and I AM SHOOTING FOR THE TOP again this year :) I love that area!!!

I live in the Yukon and we have marvelous hikes here. Has anyone ever done the Chilkoot Trail? That one starts just outside of Skagway, AK and ends in the Yukon. It is around a 2-3 day hike and full of goldrush memories. Well worth it if you ever get here!
