I'll give you the weight lifting answer given in 80% of the threads in this section.

    Starting Strength or Stronglifts.
    Forget the machines.

I used a Total Gym for a while. It sort of depends on your goal if this is something you should go after. The book gives you an a bunch of excercises, and I believe a percentage of your weight for each level. It is relatively easy to to adjust and store since it folds up. I fyou are trying to gain muscle mass this probably wouldn't be the most efficient way to go about it, however if you are just trying to supplement your workout, get a full body workout this could work very well.
Another limitation is that as you get stronger with you you have to raise the levels, likewise, as you lose weight you would have to raise the levels to keep the same weight lifted. They do have extensions to add weights to the machine to help offset this a bit.
To be honest, when I was using a Total Gym I liked it, and for someone who is/was just trying to lose wieght and maintain musle mass it worked pretty well.

    Thanks
I am not trying to bulk up to look like the Incredible Hulk. I am doing mainly cardio right now and was looking for something to help tone and if I add strength in the process then bonus. I am always leery about stuff ya see on TV and fads but looking at the physics involved it didnt look to be too bad.

I went with the total trainer ( just like a total gym).
I found it has really helped with building some muscle.
I can see the difference on me and the wife. I don't have to drive back and forth to gym which is a drive for us. It folds up and gets out of the way. Watch a few videos on youtube about them. You can work on your own exercises and don't have to follow how they say to work out.

What I like about it is that you can get a decent workout in without it being too time consuming. There are workouts that would probably gain results a little quicker but more often then not, you need an hour's time to do them. If you are patient with the Total Gym and stick with it, you'll notice the difference over time. I'm starting to use mine again just for that very reason.

I am not sure you height or anyone else that is looking at these types of home gyms.

Make sure you look up the height for the machine. I am tall and this was a factor in my purchase. I also had to watch the weight rating as I am kind of heavy.
