hip hurting from running

I've been running a lot for a year now and my hip has never hurt, until about 2 weeks ago, I did a 6 mile run (I hadn't done a long run like that for one or two weeks), and after that, my hip hurt. But its not just the joint, my muscles feel sore at the top of my pelvis, then right behind it, and then down where my hip joint is. I've never been that great at stretching, but I started to do that more and take ice baths after runs over an hour...I took a week off of running and went for a 3 mile run today and its still hurting. I know Yoga might help, but I don't know how often I can get to the gym to do a class. Any other suggestions?

Since it's been going on for a couple of weeks a check-up with your doctor would be a good idea. It sounds as if you might have injured yourself during that 6 mile run - sometimes it doesn't take much.

Some home treatment ideas are rest and ice (which you have been doing but maybe you need to give it more time). If there is no swelling in the area, after 48 hours you could also try heat. How you sleep may also affect the healing process; sleep on your good side with a pillow between your legs.

There are some exercises you can do to strengthen the hip, buttock and pelvic muscles, but you should check with your doctor or a physiotherapist first.

Check your shoes. Are they old (over 500 miles on them)? If so get new ones! This same thing happened to me, I got new shoes, stayed off my legs for a little and was back to normal.

If they are new and your still hurting my only other question is: Are you running on a flat surface or with hills? The hills may be too much for you right now. Maybe more stretching and slowly work your way up to running hills. Just a thought.

Hope you find out what's causing it, I hate being injured too! Good luck!

possibly sounds like a hip flexor. When I played football and wasn't completely warmed up, if I tweaked my hip flexor I would hate my life, its a very naggy injury that requires a lot of time off of it to heal.

especially the comment about stretching makes it sound like this.

i'm no doctor but try taking some time off of it, and if you still want to be active go for walks or other activities that don't require a big stride which causes your hip/quad/hip flexor to stretch.

this injury tends to be near the joint and runs vertically.

sorry if this post seems random and all over the place stuff just kept coming to me

Yep, I agree, if the pain is isolated to the hip, and only starts after you have been running for a while it's most likely not a fracture or bone issue, it's more likely soft tissue. I also agree that it's probably the hip flexor. If it's the IT band, it would hurt all the way down the leg, and if it was muscular, it would hurt worse and tighten up after you stop running. The only other thing I can think of is a vascular issue that crops up with runners, if doing hip flexor stretches before and after running doesn't solve this after a few weeks, I would go have it checked, there's a vascular condition that constricts blood flow in the pelvis of female runners that can cause this type of pain, but it's extremely rare.

    Hey Dutchess,

I had a stress fracture last year in my left hip...from running, hiking and walking with weight - I'm in the military and wasn't resting it enough. Because we are women, and the the shape of our hips is so much different than men, we tend to be very sensitive to these types of fractures. Rest is critical when you're running so much. And if you aren't taking the recommended amount of calcium, it really will affect your hips (ankles and shins too - but hips are especially vulnerable).

Get a bone scan as soon as possible.

I tried the stretching/yoga/ice thing while I kept running and I made it A LOT worse. I ignored the pain for almost two months (because it hurt while running, but was bearable the rest of the day ....eventually it started aching in my sleep). It was a fracture that went 80% through AND a strained hip flexor (which was making it worse). X-rays don't always show the begingings of stress fractures so a bone scan is crucial.

It started hurting just in my hip, then moved to the back of my hip, right above my butt. Hurt to the touch and to move, or put weight on it. It is one of the most frustrating injuries, because all you can do is rest, and pump calcium.

The thing is, you probably didn't even hurt it on that run. My doctor said that most hip stress fractures begin hurting 2-3 weeks AFTER you actually start breaking through the bone. So you may have had a small hairline break for a few weeks before you actually started hurting. So it could be a lot worse that just what you are experiencing now.

Stop running immediately. See a doctor and don't just settle for an X-ray - get a bone scan. I don't mean to scare you but because I put the correct treatment off for so long, I ended up having to take almost 8 months off. And starting over was SO frustrating. If the hip DOES break all the way through - the only option you have is immediate surgery and a pin in your hip for the rest of your life - it's not like a leg or an arm that you can just splint/put in a cast.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. I would love to help - and help you avoid the pain and stress I had to go through. :noway:

    Good luck~

i get pain in that same spot your talking about...your hip joint...its kinda behind where your leg bone meets your hip bone....its called your piriformis muscle. i linked you to a website about it, and shows how to stretch it. i get spasms in it, which aggrivate my sciatic...so take care of it now before the pain starts moving
