Hello,

I have just started the P90x program. I am on level two of their Nutrition plan (2,400 cals/day). I weigh 160lbs and am looking to gain mass/muscle. I do NOT need to lose weight (fat maybe but not overall weight).

According to MFP, I need to eat 300g protein/day. I think this is excessive and could do more harm than good. Should I stick to 1g of protein per 1 lb of body weight..so 160g protein/day? Should I up my carbs?

Thanks!

MFP does not suggest 300 grams a day for a person 160 olbs. You entered something wrong

Up your carbs and fat, there's definitely no good reason to eat 300 grams of protein per day, it won't give any added benefit.

I weigh 275lbs and am in fairly good shape. My daily protein goal is 260grams. Something is weigh off in your estimation.

Also, I would suggest setting your proteins/carbs/fat in MFP to 35/35/30....try to get an equal number of calories from carbs and protein.

Thanks for the replies. On MFP I entered 50% protein, 30% carbs and 20% fat. The numbers it is giving me are 300g protein, 180g carbs and 53g fat. Am I doing something wrong?

A friend of mine who is a bio chemists that works for a supplement company, is a fitness fanatic and has a LOT of published research suggested it. For some reason carbs (NNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOO!!!!) are a dirty word. Do as you please. :)

In the same way that cardio has gotten a bad rap in recent months on these boards, it's astounding to me how ideas with zero merit and no basis in reality [science] can find so much traction.
  • Hey does anyone know how to change the protein intake for my diet on this.....right now it has me at like 75g of protein a day but i wanna change it to like 220 or so? if you know how fill me in id appreciate it thanks!! ;)

I wouldn't follow that advice either, because I think the carbs are set too low, and the protein is probably too high. Percentages are a terrible way to set goals anyway, because protein and fat should really be set based on body size, not an arbitrary percentage. Nutrition textbooks recommend 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight for a sedentary individual more for more active people, or people losing weight.) That would be a completely different percentage for any person, based on their weight, and their calorie goal for the day. Arbitrarily setting a percentage goal would generally result in either way too high, or way too low levels of a macro. Using your suggestion would put me about 50 grams over in protein than what I actually need to consume, and about 50 grams under my usual carb level.

I think carbs can not be overlooked, but 300g protein is way too high for me.

I'll stick to 1g protein per lb. I can see how carbs could be harmful when losing weight. I'm trying to gain weight and muscle...I need the carbs.

carbs will not harm your weight loss goals unless you keep going over your calorie goal. here is a good link to another forum, it is packed with good information on macro calculating.
